Despite snow in many areas, the North East Aberdeen Angus Club’s 25th Black Beauty Bonanza show at Thainstone Agricultural Centre saw 70 calves and yearlings from no fewer than 19 herds, forward for the event.
Judge Andrew Hodge, Rulesmains, Duns, was most impressed by the standard of cattle. “The quality was excellent throughout all the classes with the champion winners in each section being exceptional,” said Mr Hodge.
With no overall winner, the first championship, for the supreme calf, was presented to the bull Massies Patriot, a previously unshown entry and the first exhibited from Graeme Massie’s new herd.
Mr Massie and his father Neil dispersed the Blelack Aberdeen Angus herd at Stirling in October 2021, with Graeme now owning the 18-cow Massies herd based at Braeburn, Finzean, Banchory. He first topped the bull calf section and then went on to win the overall calf honours with a seven-month-old calf by the Netherallan Peter Pershore son, Blelack Equinox – a bull owned by AJR farms and used on loan.
The calf is out of the privately purchased Newfield Premium, bred by Neil Gillanders and sired by Blelack Eastwood. It was brought out with assistance of Gabriella Massie, who also assisted with the reserve bull calf winner, Lindertis Atlas, a March-born entry by Rawburn Jingo Eric, again from Mr Massie in partnership with Paul Allan of Murdoch Allan Bakers. The calf was bought alongside its dam, Lindertis Annabel, at the herd dispersal at UA Stirling, earlier this year.
Reserve calf was the heifer winner, Tonley Princess 142, a Rawburn Jester Eric daughter from Neil and Mark Wattie, Mains of Tonley, Alford. Similarly aged and again on her first outing, she is bred from a previous home-bred Princess that has produced heifers to 20,000gns.
The father-and-son team’s 100-cow herd also produced the runner-up yearling with the July 2023-born bull, Tonley Endpart. Previously unshown and sired by the 12,000gns Duncanziemere Jetstream, his dam is the Blelack Evor daughter, Tonley Elma, that bred the February 2023 Stirling champion that went on to sell for 24,000gns. Endpart is bound for the Bull Sales at Stirling in February 2025.
Supreme yearling was Richard Hassall and Rachel Wyllie’s well-known show heifer Idvies Elisa, a 19-month-old entry that was champion at Fife, West Fife, and Perth and Kinross Shows. Brought out by Carol Rettie and bought privately as a 10-month-old from Alasdair and Graeme Fraser, her pedigree features the 30,000gns Dunanziemere Jacobite, with the dam being Idvies Elstrome, by Idvies Ferrari.
Standing next to her to land the reserve yearling heifer honours was Ray Gardiner’s Newton Eyre, a 21-month-old daughter of Idvies Ferrari, out of Newton Muchalls Eyre. She was brought out by Emma Smith and Gabriella Massie, and was placed at the Royal Highland and Stars of the Future. Reserve yearling bull was Hamish Sclater’s Deveron Elliott, shown by stockman Ewen MacGregor from Denhead of Dunlugas. Yearling bull champion at Borderway Agri-Expo and first at Turriff Show back in August, this March 2023-born entry is by Rawburn Braw Lad and out of Deveron Estorella – a former reserve champion heifer calf at the Expo.
Hamish and his wife Margaret’s 60-plus cow Deveron herd also scooped honours for the reserve heifer calf with another by the same sire on her first outing. Deveron Lady, a March 2024-born heifer, is out a previous home-bred Lady that was also a former show-winning calf.
Newton Edgar and Newton Prince Caledonia, from Ray Gardiner, teamed up to win the champion calf pairs with the reserve honours presented to Ballindalloch Home Farms’ Ballindalloch Faye and Ballindalloch Excel.
Entries from Alex and Philippa Davie’s Perkhill herd won the yearling pair honours, with a duo from Ken and Margaret Howie’s Cairnton herd landing the runner-up.
Strong competition in the stockmanship section saw 19-year-old Andrew Reid, AJR Farms, win the senior section for the second consecutive year, with Cameron Elliot and Max Harold leading the intermediate and junior sections respectively.
