North East Live, a new prime stock show staged at Darlington Farmers Auction Mart, saw Black Velvet, a Limousin cross heifer from Beth Wilkinson and Gareth Small, Leyburn, take the supreme beef championship.

The May 2023-born heifer, which scaled 693kg, was originally bought at Leyburn Auction Mart last year from D Alderston, East Cowton. A daughter of Huntershall Odyssey, she was also commercial champion at Wensleydale Show.

Judge James Nisbet, Sorn, found his reserve overall in the Limousin cross heifer – All Eyes On Me from Alister and Liz Vance, Bridgehouse, Whithorn, Newton Stewart. Their April 2023-born entry by Cloughhead Napoleon was bought at Kirkby Stephen last year and stood first in her class at the Great Yorkshire in July.

Coming a close reserve to her was the 360kg Limousin cross heifer Bella, from Tecwyn Jones, Anglesey. This February-born entry is sired by the 14,000gns Seisog Rio.

A Charolais cross led the steers for Jennifer Hyslop, Settle.

This was Shakem Up’arry, a 699kg son of Carradale Neptune that stood steer champion at the Great Yorkshire.

Beth Wilkinson was back in the money winning the pedigree calf championship with Epik Valkyrie, an eight-month-old home-bred Limousin heifer by Huntershall Rosco.

Taking the reserve was John Smith Jackson’s 10-month-old Limousin bull calf Hightown Vigil, by Pabo Randy.

Bentham-based producers Roberth Garth and Sarah Priestley won the overall in the sheep section with their continental winners, a pair of Beltex cross lambs sired by a Kingledores ram. They scaled in at 40kg.

Judge Stephen Sutherland, Thurso, found his reserve in the champion butchers’ lambs, 43.5kg Beltex from the Halls, Inglewood Edge.

Meanwhile, Suffolk crosses scaling 42kg won the native title for Harry Askwith, Crook.
