A cold and drizzly day failed to dampen the spirits of exhibitors and competitors attending the 172nd Langholm Show, where livestock secretary Sharon Roberston praised exhibitors for ‘getting behind the show’ and making it a success despite the weather.
Overall champion of champions was the small ridden hunter, Casablanca owned by Hilary McTaggart, Greendale, Hawick. This part Irish draft gelding by Carentino Glory, and out of Ballinrobe Henrietta has nothing to prove.
Last season, he competed at nine shows and was only beaten once. He has won six out of nine shows this season, including champion at Gilmerton and Biggar. He has also qualified for the International Horse Show in London in December.
The Texel champion from Zoe Hall, Horsleyhill, Hawick made it two in a row as she took the sheep inter-breed title. This gimmer by a Procters ram bought at Kelso and out of a home-bred ewe, previously stood supreme at Yarrow Show.

This home-bred female by Hindhope Jackpot is no stranger to the show ring, having been crowned breed champion at Dumfries last month, and first prize gimmer at Dumfries and Moffat Shows in 2023.
This ewe also claimed the South Country Cheviot breed society’s champion of champions trophy when all the champion winners of various shows compete at Langholm for the overall title. This year, the winners from Holm, Benty, and the Border Union were forward.
Maverick, a Limousin cross from Davie and Lynne Watret, Muirfield, Hightae, claimed the commercial and inter-breed cattle title. The 17-month-old bullock bought at Oban Christmas show and sale last year, was shown by 11-year-old Aiden Edgar. Reserve overall went to the Galloway champion, Ufemia of Balgray, a 12-month-old heifer calf from David and Rosemary Cornthwaite, Balgray Holm, Lockerbie.
