A well-known Galloway show heifer from Jim and Selina Ross, Romesbeoch, Shawhead, took the tri-colour at a warm Moffat Show.
The 11-month-old, Kirkstead Lea G11, bred by Alan McClymont, is sired by Blackcraig Bugsy Malone and out of Kirkstead Lea D14. Bought at Wallets Marts, Castle Douglas, in February, she boasts championship trophies from the Great Yorkshire and Stewartry, and a reserve at the Royal Highland and Dumfries.
Cattle inter-breed judging is underway at Moffat show
The championship lineup was made up of the inter-breed sheep, light horse, and dog winners.
Champion of champions judge, Scott McKinnon, Cargenbridge, Dumfries, said: “It was very close between the sheep and Galloway; it could have been either. However, it was the Galloway that caught my eye.”
Supreme sheep was the North Country Cheviot park-type champion, from Robbie McCormack, Croftheads, Lockerbie. Inter-breed judge Dougie Fleming, Nisbet, Coulter, found his winner in a ewe by Hilltop Windsor out of Muirton Picture Perfect-sired dam. Previously she has won reserve female in her section here last year.
Kenny Johnstone, Boghouse, Crawfordjohn, won the inter-breed sheep pairs with Texels.
Reserve inter-breed cattle was the 17-month-old Limousin bull, Goldies Upshot, an Ampertaine Opportunity-sired entry from Bruce Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries.

Ayrshire (Judge: G Baillie, Crumhaugh, Larkhall). Champion – G Sloan, Ryemuir, Lochmaben, with the seven-month-old heifer, Ryemuir Elevated Flo 2. She is sired by Sherdon Elevated Red and out of Ryemuir Revolver Flo 2. Sole entry.
Holstein Friesian (Judge: G Baillie). Champion – B and V Davidson, Errolston, Gretna, with Errolston Gauntlet I Ricki Ex93, a fourth calver by Errolston Gauntlet out of Errolston Miss Ricki. Champion Holstein at the South West Scotland Dairy Show in November 2022. Reserve – A Irving, Bectonhall, Chapelknowe, Canonbie, with the heifer Bectonhall Truxton Bess, giving 40 litres. She is a daughter of Clear-Echo Tahti Truxton and sired by Bectonhall Alvarez Bess. Heifer, third calver, calf, bred – B and V Davidson. Heifer in milk, senior cow in milk, pairs – T and M Irving. Second calver, group of three – RC Gemmell. Local area – E Paul.
Galloway (Judge: I Finlay, Blackcraig, Castle Douglas). AOB cattle (Judge: Beef – I Goldie, Greenfield, Annan. Dairy – G Baillie). Champion and reserve inter-breed cattle – B Goldie, Townfoot, Mouswald, Dumfries, with a 17-month-old Limousin bull, Goldies Upshot, by Ampertaine Opportunity, out of Goldies Obsession. Third in the Beefbreeder section at the Royal Highland and champion at Dumfries. Reserve from the same home was the 11-month-old heifer, Goldies Ulrika, sired by Goldies Juggler and out of Goldies Musical. Reserve to the bull and beef calf champion at Dumfries. Shorthorn (Judge: I Finlay). Champion – G and C Brough, Cotland, Tinwald, Dumfries, with the 2½-year-old in-calf heifer, Broughs Desiree Sadie. Sired by Glenariff Manduro and out of Broughs Desiree Joules, she won her class here last year. Reserve – D Bull, Stapelton Grange, Annan, with the 15-month-old Hazelbank Leila, purchased at Carey Coombs’ herd dispersal. She is sired by Dunsyre Lord Nelson and out of Dunsyre Leila 46. Third at Dumfries. Heifer born in 2021 – G and C Brough. Heifer born in 2022 – D Bull.

Beltex (Judge: A Johnston, Meikle Carleith. Galston). Champion – JM Wharton and Son, Snade, Dunscore, Dumfries, with a two-crop ewe purchased as a gimmer at Carlisle. She is by Hackney Ferret and out of Trujim Dawn. Reserve from the same home was a two-shear tup by Ainstable Ernis purchased at Kelso last year. Tup, tup lamb, ewe, group – JM Wharton and Son. First at Biggar and fourth at Dumfries. Reserve from the same home, was the ewe lamb, Kinnel Valley Juicy Lucy, sired by a Rathbone tup and out of CJ’s Gabby. Second at Biggar. Tup – M Graham. Bluefaced Leicester (Judge: Hazel Brown, Toxside, Gorebridge). Champion – K Smith, Low Arkland, Castle Douglas, with a tup lamb, by a Myfyrian ram and out a home-bred ewe. Reserve was a shearling from the same home purchased at Carlisle, from North Burndale as a tup lamb. All classes – K Smith.
Suffolk (Judge: W Gray). Champion – P and D Reid, Calfpark, Mouswald, Dumfries, with home-bred four-crop ewe by Rookery Rashford, out of a Cairness Custom Made sired-ewe. Reserve at Dumfries. Reserve from the same home, was a Collessie-sired ewe lamb. Tup – WJ Borthwick. Tup lamb, ewe, ewe lamb, group – P and D Reid.

Zwartbles (Judge: C Duffy, The Smiddy, Dunragit, Stranraer). Champion – A Thorburn, Holmlea, Eastriggs, with the aged ewe Holmlea Karenza. Sired by Holmlea Count, she was National champion and inter-breed champion at Three Counties and the Royal Cheshire. Reserve – T Graham, Midtown, Caerlaverock, Dumfries, with a ewe lamb sired by Midtown Knockout. First at Biggar and second at Dumfries and Cumberland. Tup – A Thorburn. Tup lamb, group – I Boyes.
