Alistair and Anne Foubister finally got their hands on the supreme cattle champion sash at Orkney County Show after many years of taking red rosettes home to the farm at Netherton in Holm.

Their winner was a 27-month-old Aberdeen Angus heifer bought last October, in Stirling for 5000gns after standing second in her class. Cairnton Black Nancy Y487, bred by Ken Howie, was brought out by daughter Joanna and is by Cairnton Black Captain, out of Cairnton Black Nancy V448. She is due to calf in the next month.

The Foubsiters have just recently established a small herd of pure bred Aberdeen Angus having previously focused on British Blues.

Reserve overall was a Limousin cross steer calf exhibited by Balfour Baillie of Sebay View in Tankerness. It had come through strong classes in the black/blue cross section before catching the eye of inter-breed judge John Morton from Annan. The eight-month-old Limousin cross is by Netherhall Jackpot and out of a Limousin cross cow. That animal, and the heifer calf, which he won the cross-bred coloured section with, will be part of a seven-strong team destined for the Spectacular at Thainstone, at the end of next week.

Charles Copland and Jo Higgs rounded off a successful summer show season by taking the inter-breed sheep title for the second year running, with the same animal that reigned supreme last August.

Their overall winner was the Beltex champion, Orkney Jameela, an ET gimmer with Hackney breeding on both sides. Her sire is the 3500gns Hackney Gerwyn with the dam being Hackney Elaina. She also stood third at the Royal Highland as a lamb and fifth earlier this year in the gimmer class.

The win caps off an excellent few months for Mr Copland and Miss Higgs who operate the Bimbister Partnership at Lenahowe in Sandwick. They took the reserve Blue Texel title at Ingliston before getting engaged at the sheep lines and also produced the champion Blue Texel

The section continues to expand with a record number of sheep at the Bignold Park, which attracted an estimated crowd of more than 10,000.

Reserve in the sheep line was a Suffolk shown by David Delday, who runs the 21-strong Newark flock at Quoybelloch in Deerness. Strathbogie Amy, a two-crop ewe bought as a lamb, is by Strathbogie 2020 and out of a Castleisle Knockout-sired ewe that has produced registered sons to 40,000gns.

In the horse and pony section the overall winner was the Irish draught, Shanbally Liberty, the champion in the light-legged ridden section, exhibited by Sharon Wylie, Swartland Farm, Dounby.

Taking the blue and white sash was the champion Shetland pony from Hools Shetland Pony Stud, based at Brough in Toab. Doing the business for them was an 11-year-old mare that has scooped numerous titles at the Highland, the Black Isle and numerous other local shows over the past decade.
