For the first time since a champion of champions competition was introduced at Turriff Show, the inter-breed sheep winner, a Charollais ewe from the Ingrams of Logie Durno, Inverurie, was tapped out as supreme overall.

Overall judge Dennis Gall from Lockerbie said: “The Charollais ewe is perfection. There is a leg in each corner, a beautiful head, a good back end and length. Perfection and she knew it. I couldn’t look past her.”

Inter-breed sheep judge Gavin Ross, Ross Bros, Strichen Mains, who also won the carcase competition with an Aberdeen Angus cross heifer, said: “A fantastically well-bred sheep.

“She caught my eye as soon as I saw her. A great sheep from top to bottom and one of the best I have ever seen. A credit to the Ingram family and great to see such good local Aberdeenshire breeding on display.”

The one-crop ewe which was shown by Bruce Ingram, is sired by Boyo Vancouver and has previously picked up championships at the Royal Highland and the Royal Welsh as well as reserve inter-breed sheep at the Highland.

Reserve overall was the supreme beef champion, which fittingly was the Simmental champion from the breed’s National Show. This was Reece and Andrew Simmers’ Annick Ginger’s Lucia from Keith.

“She’s a tremendous cow doing her job well with the calf by her side,” Mr Gall said.

The four-year-old was bought at the late Lachlan Quarm’s herd dispersal at Stirling and has already taken the inter-breed beef honours at the Royal Highland. She is sired by Wolfstar Gold Digger.

Runner-up for the supreme beef, judged by Drew Hyslop, Barrhill, was the three-year-old black Highland heifer from Coul Estate, Newtonmore – Lady White 144 of Balmoral. She also boasts a big show career that includes championship wins at the Great Yorkshire, Royal Welsh, Black Isle, and Perth.

It was also a big day for Bluefaced Leicester breeders with the Association’s Scottish National show for traditional and crossing-types.

Matthew Seed’s two-shear ram, Shrewbridge R11 took the traditional championship. He was bought last year at Builth Wells for £3000 and was champion at Black Isle. (See page 16) for photograph.

Reserve overall was the supreme beef champion, which fittingly was the Simmental champion from the breed's National Show that was also being staged at Turriff. This was Reece and Andrew Simmers' Annick Ginger’s Lucia from Keith.

“She's a tremendous cow doing her job well with the calf by her side. Well-presented and turned out,” Mr Gall said.

The four-year-old cow was bought at the late Lachlan Quarm's herd dispersal at Stirling and has had a successful season taking inter-breed beef title at the Royal Highland Show. She is sired by Wolfstar Gold Digger.

Runner up for the supreme beef, judged by Drew Hyslop, Barrhill was a black Highland heifer from Coul Estate, Newtonmore. Lady White 144 of Balmoral which was bought privately from the estate also boasts a big show career that includes championship wins at the Great Yorkshire, Royal Welsh, Black Isle and Perth.

Champion Clydesdale was the previously unshown Bogton Ironman from Keeley Gordon, Ellon. This eight-year-old gelding is by Bogton Renown.

It was also the Bluefaced Leicester National show where Matthew Seed’s Shrewbridge R11 took championship for the traditional type. The two-shear tup bought as a shearling at Builth Wells for £3000 is sired by an Ashes N2 tup that sold for £6200 at Welshpool in 2020. He was champion at Black Isle
