A well-known Limousin show cow from Robert and Jean Graham’s Stirling-based herd was crowned overall champion of champions at a glorious Perth Show.

Grahams Ruth, a 4.5-year-old cow that made up part of the inter-breed team at the Royal Highland, Great Yorkshire and the Royal Welsh in 2023 and 2024, and has secured numerous breed and inter-breed championships in between, looked every bit as bright and sharp as she did when she scooped the overall champion of champions award at Ayr Show in May.

She was selected supreme overall by a panel of judges who had to choose a winner from the inter-breed sheep, cattle, heavy horse, and goat title holders.

Ruth was paraded with her impressive November-born bull calf at foot, Grahams Utopia, a Huntershall Gladiator son, by stockman Stewart Bett and his wife Lynsey. She was described by the judges as an ‘excellent cow’.

David Watson, Banchory and Archie MacGregor, Kilsyth, the inter-breed beef and sheep judges respectively, said the Limousin had outstanding presence and was so correct with a great top line. She was also tapped out as supreme for being full of breed character and having a great calf.

Adding to the Grahams’ celebrations, Ruth and the relatively new stock bull Garrowby Tarzan, a 12,000gns purchase at Carlisle in October 2023, scooped the inter-breed beef pairs while Lily Smith (10) from Huntly won the overall cattle young handlers when parading Ruth’s calf Utopia.

The judges were also most impressed by the supreme sheep, a two-crop Suffolk ewe from Robert Bryce, who was winning a second inter-breed sheep championship here.

His showstopper is another that has made her presence felt all summer, having stood inter-breed sheep at Dunblane Show and champion at Gargunnock.

In a mirror image of the cattle pairs, the Chalmerston Suffolk ewe by Strathview Hashtag also teamed up with Mr Bryce’s male champion, a two-shear Sitlow-bred ram, to win the inter-breed sheep pairs

Mr MacGregor found his reserve individual in the south-type Blackface champion, a gimmer by a £32,000 Glenrath from Matthew Hamilton and son Matthew, South Cobbinshaw, West Lothian.

Lily Smith, Turriff, won the cattle young handlers and also paraded the overall champion of champions' calf, Grahams UtopiaLily Smith, Turriff, won the cattle young handlers and also paraded the overall champion of champions' calf, Grahams Utopia

He also tapped out a south-type Blackface from Mairi Paterson and son Robert, Dunruchan, as champion in the inter-breed male Blackface championship against the north-type. This was a three-shear ram bought for £10,000 from Williamhope as a shearling at Lanark, in partnership with Tinnis.

Dutch Spotted picked up the runner-up in the sheep pairs.

David Watson, who breeds Salers cattle at Darnford, Banchory, also had a busy day.
