Glorious sunshine ensured a good turnout of exhibitors and bumper crowds for Stranraer Show which is particularly renowned for its strong show of dairy cattle of all breeds.

Taking the top spot in this section was the lead Holstein Aliann Pepper Elegance, from James McNeil, son, James, and his wife Elaine of Cairnpat Holsteins, Lochans.

Their third calver, which is classified Ex93, was bought at the Aliann herd dispersal for 11,000gns and is one of 430 cows run in the herd. A daughter of Delaberge Pepper, she is out of Aliann CF Elegance, and was paraded giving 50kg having calved eight months previous.

Dairy inter-breed judge Johnny Cousar, Kilmarnock, described her as: “Tall, sharp and full of dairy qualities. She has a fantastic udder and mammary system, and tracks well – just a type of cow everyone should be looking for.”

The Jersey from the Scott family of Nethervalley, Shacklehill, Mossblown, took the reserve inter-breed. This was the heifer in milk Nethervalley Oliver Regina, which calved four months ago and is giving 35litres per day. She is sired by Dutch Hollow Oliver and out of the show cow Monument Chrome Regina Ex92 – a previous champion at AgriScot, the Royal Highland, and Dairy Expo.

The Texel champion caught the eye of sheep inter-breed judge Angus Kennedy (snr), Biggar, when he gave it the winning tap. This was a natural February-born ewe lamb from the Grant family, High Croach, Cairnryan. A daughter of Rhaeadr Entrepreneur, she is out of a Fachell Dodgy Dave sired-ewe which was champion here as a ewe lamb. “My supreme has a very correct top with a tremendous gigot and is full of breed character,” said Mr Kennedy.

This was closely followed by the Beltex supreme, a home-bred two-crop ewe from the Campbell family Carsewalloch, Creetown. A daughter of Callacraig Bullseye, she is out of a home-bred ewe by Tywi Dynamite.

The Scottish National Zwartbles Show, which was also staged at Stranraer, was won by the ewe Holmlea Karenza, from John Thorburn, Holmlea, Eastriggs.

She is sired by Holmlea Count and was National champion and inter-breed champion at Three Counties and the Royal Cheshire as well as breed champion at Border Union.

Inter-breed beef judge Dennis Gall, Lockerbie, found his supreme in the commercial champion, the black Limousin cross heifer Shaboozey, from Alister and Liz Vance, Bridgehouse, Whithorn.

“She is full of character through her head and moves well. She has the best plates and backend on her – an outstanding animal,” described Mr Gall.

This home-bred heifer which stood reserve champion at the Great Yorkshire Show, is sired by Homebyres Norham and out of the ex-show cow, Too Glam to Give a Dam.

Runner-up was the Belted Galloway Highland Show champion Huntfield Yvette from Molly (17) and Daisy (15) Keiley, Carton Croft, Dalbeattie. Their 2020-born in-calf cow, Huntfield Yvette, was bought as a calf at foot with its dam, Huntfield Uppy. She was paraded with her September-born heifer calf, Croft Elsie.

Champion was the October 2020-born Limousin bull, Ronick Rocketman, bought at Carlisle in May 2022. He is sired by Plumtree Fantastic and out of Ronick Onsie. Champion at Stewartry. Runner up was the rising four-year-old cow, Perth Rosario which was bought at the Red Ladies sale at Carlisle in 2022 from Tom Jones. A daughter of Ampertaine Gigolo, she was shown with her March-born heifer calf, Druchtag Vimto, which is sired by the champion. All classes – Messrs Oxley.

Runner up was the fourth calver, Carsenaw Eunice 151, which also calved in May and is giving the same amount of milk. Classified VG88 she is sired by Changue Stadium and out of Carsenaw Eunice 108.
