A damp, cold day failed to dampen spirits at Dalkeith as crowds flocked to the annual show staged in the beautiful grounds of Dalkeith Palace.

Fortunately, the rain held off for the champion of champions judging when the Ross family from Wester Middleton, Gorebridge, emerged victorious, claiming the supreme with their commercial cattle champion – a Limousin cross cow and her 10-month-old Charolais cross calf at foot.

The cow and her Rosco Popadom-sired calf joined six other section champions in a battle for the overall show title judged by Northumberland farmer, Frankie Walton, who said there was a tremendous lineup of animals in front of him.

Commenting on his choice of supreme, he said “She’s the greatest cow and calf I’ve seen – that’s precisely what you want to see in the commercial market.”
