CC Cindy, a 21-month-old black Limousin cross heifer was crowned champion of champions at a busy Alyth Show to secure a second consecutive supreme overall at the Blairgowrie-based event for Wilson Peters.

Last year, Mr Peters who is farm manager at Monzie Farms, Gilmerton, Crieff, took centre stage with Sassparilla, a similarly aged home-bred Limousin cross heifer, and this year’s supreme was much the same way bred being sired by the same stock bull, Carnmorn Lionbar and out of a British Blue cross cow.

Already a star performer, CC Cindy boasts numerous titles to her name, to include section championships and reserve inter-breed beef awards at both Angus and West Fife Shows. She also won the commercial cattle honours at Fife Show.

For the supreme, she was up against the top winners in the sheep and horse lines, judged on a points basis by the three section referees, John Hamilton, Ruthven, who selected the beef winners; Sally Guild, Fraserburgh, who placed the sheep and overall horse judge, Mary Sievwright, Rothienorman.

Just pipped at the post, by one point was the supreme horse, Alison Blackburn’s three-year-old Highland filly pony, Gypsy of Roisbheinn from the Roisbheinn stud, Aberfeldy. A daughter of Thorn Logie, out of Kit of Roisbheinn, she was on her first outing of the year having stood best two-year-old at the Forfar Foal Show, last year.

Also out for the supreme overall was the inter-breed sheep champion, a previously unshown one-crop Suffolk ewe from Finlay Hunter (15), who runs just four ewes in his up and coming Sunset flock based at West Cairnhill, Culsalmond. Producing a first supreme overall for the flock established in 2020, this home-bred entry is sired by Crewelands Kingpin and out a Waterton-bred female.

Mr Peters’ partner, Kim Stretch, also had a cracking day, winning the championship amongst the Texels and the commercial sheep, with the latter going on to scoop the reserve inter-breed sheep honours. Her show stopper was Beth, a Texel cross Cheviot Mule, that landed the supreme sheep at West Fife and the runner-up sheep title at Fife.

Notably, her Texel champion, Eve, a one-crop ewe, was out of her supreme sheep champion here last year, Gloria which in turn was the dam of the reserve inter-breed sheep pairs – an ET-bred tup lamb and ewe lamb both of which were sired by Ettrick Earthquake. A Beltex pairing from Bryan and Deirdre Wylie’s Balbrydie flock from Kirriemuir, took the tri-colour. Making up the winning duo was the three-shear tup, Hackney Gladiator and the reserve any other breed champion, a home-bred four-crop ewe by Gregors Brutus.

Having selected the commercial cattle champion as supreme beef, inter-breed judge, John Hamilton, tapped out the pedigree leader, the Highland as his choice of reserve overall. Magaida 4 of Earn, a seven-year-old cow from Heather Corrigal, was paraded with 11-week-old bull calf at foot, Stewie of Earn, by Graeme and Rebecca Easton. She was champion at Angus Show the previous week.

Beef Shorthorns from Major John Gibb and his daughter Catriona, Glenisla, won the beef pairs and comprised the yearling bull, Glenisla Talisman and two-year-old heifer, Glenisla Foxglove Flake.
