First time exhibitors, Niall and Jim Goldie, went home in style from a sunny, albeit chilly Stirling Show, having won the Simmental championship, supreme beef and overall champion of championship with Newbiemains I.Candy.

The two brothers from Newbiemains, Annan, were let loose by their parents Jim and Patricia Goldie, and took the show by storm with a seven-year-old cow paraded by Abby Forsyth.

I.Candy, is one of 150cows in the herd and is a daughter of the former stock bull Woodhall Fantastic. She was on first outing since winning a red rosette at the Great Yorkshire as a heifer and was paraded with her February-born bull calf, Newbiemains Louisvuitton.

“She’s so well balanced and fresh looking for being a seven-year-old cow when she’s feeding her calf so well,” said Brian Wills, Brunthill, Kinross, the overall champion of champions judge, who had to select a supreme from the inter-breed cattle, sheep and horse winners.

“The three animals are all very good examples of their breeds and it was very close between the three, but I put the Clydesdale ahead of the supreme sheep, because she had a wee bit more style,” said Mr Wills.

Reserve overall was Robert Sibbald’s home-bred Clydesdale champion, Shielhill Platinum Queen, a two-year-old filly from Thorn Farm, Dollar. She already boasts a kist load of awards having scooped the same award at West Fife and the breed championship at Drymen, this year on top of numerous accolades last year. She is by Macfin Starlight and bred from a previous home-bred show mare.

It was also a good day for local pedigree sheep and cattle breeder, Stephanie Dick, who not only won the Scottish National Blue Texel show which was also being staged at the event, but also the inter-breed sheep honours with the same animal. Stephanie, who is more accustomed to winning supreme beef titles, landed her first overall sheep ticket with Stephick Her Majesty, a gimmer bred from the 2022 Great Yorkshire reserve champion, Stephick Fairy Tale. She was on her first outing of the year.

Inter-breed beef judge, David Baillie, Calla, Carnwath, was most impressed by his line-up of breed winners and admitted he had a tough job in selecting a reserve.

Inter-breed sheep judge, Iain Minto, Townhead, Dolphinton, faced an equally difficult task in finding a reserve from no fewer than 12 sections but eventually plumped for the best from the Beltex – Mortons Jelly Baby, a gimmer shown by Kirsty and Andrew Morton, Lochend, Denny.
