It was a dream come true for Allen and Emma Shortt, Castlederg, County Tyrone, and James and Katrina Little, Wigton, when they produced the supreme honours from more than 200 entries in the suckled calf classes.

Speaking about the event was the judge, Michael Alford, Foxhill, Devon: "It was a tremendous show of cattle throughout, I am extremely pleased with my champion and reserve."

"Both are handy weight cattle with lovely tops on them. They are both show cattle which were brought out to perfection, having fantastic confirmation and have that fat cover we are looking for, they will be under 400kg dead, exactly what the meat industry wants.

"However, I had to choose one, and my champion has a fantastic body of beef on her she is low to the ground and round, just like a 50 gallon drum," he added.

The supreme, bred by Allen and Emma, the Littles bought a share in this May 2021 born Limousin heifer, Sassy Girl, which is an embryo calf sired by Trueman Idol and out of Ashmara Classy Girl. Having already stood first in her class at the Limousin national show this year, she is now destined for LiveScot and the Welsh Winter Fair.

Following her all day after standing second in the same class was the British Blue cross heifer, Prime Suspect, from Blair Duffton, Gareth Smalls and Beth Wilkinson, Irvington Close, Kilkeel, Co Down. Bred by John Smith-Jackson, Lipwood Well, Haydon Bridge, Nothumberland, she was purchased for a calf record price of £9500 in March at Carlisle this year. Having also stood first in her class at the Balmoral Show this year, she is a daughter of the British Blue, Tannt Lotto and out of a good breeding pure Limousin cow.

The steer champion went to the May 2021 born, Maraiscote Sid from Ian and Andrew Nimmo, Bogside Farm, Wishaw. Having been shown all summer – steer champion at the Great Yorkshire Show, and various champions at local shows – this is the first big win here for the Nimmo family with this just being the second time exhibiting here. This pure Limousin is sired by the well known, Bassingfield Machoman, which has bred to 28,000gns and out of Maraiscote Mia. He is now destined for LiveScot and the Welsh Winter Fair this back end where he will be sold.

Richard Wright from Somerset, produced the reserve honours in this section –with this being his 56th show – coming in the form of the July 2021 born Limousin cross, Regie. This home-bred steer was brought out by stockman, Paul Walker, and is a son of Bailea Neymar which is out of a British Blue cross.
