Evening Stanleycup Jennifer has made AgriScot history taking the Super Cow title for the second year in a row.

Over 10,000 visitors attended the event to witness the very best of the dairy sector on display in the show ring.

The fourth calver, owned by the Wilson family of Evening Holsteins, Carlisle also repeated her success of UK Dairy Day – where she took that prize for the second time in a row back in September.

As the final five cows paraded round the ring, vying for the title, the judge, Iain McLean, of the Priestland Herd in Northern Ireland said he had experienced a nervous year waiting to judge this one-day business event, renowned for its superior quality show of dairy cattle.

Mr McLean who runs a 180-cow herd of Holsteins, and a few Jerseys, Ayrshires and Dairy Shorthorns, and over 200 followers in Northern Ireland said he was over the moon to be invited to judge the competition.

He said: “It draws the best dairy breeders from across the country and I feel very privileged.”

He said he had an exceptional lineup of animals before him, but there could only be one super cow. He described his supreme champion and reserve as two world class cows of amazing quality. He said he had no hesitation in awarding the title to the cow fondly known as ‘The Jennifer’, describing her udder as phenomenal, and that she was a beautiful definition of the Holstein breed.

He said: “She had everything a cow should have, dairyness, clean throughout, openness of rib and the width of her rear udder was awesome.”

The maximum-scored EX95 cow is out of Evening Stanleycup Jennifer, who is herself classified Ex96. She is one of 450 milking cows in James, Louise, Charlotte and Emma Wilsons’ Evening herd, based at Thursby, near Carlisle.

Born in November 2018, she calved in June and currently produces 65 litres daily.

In 2023, this fourth calver was also supreme at The Borderway Expo.

The reserve Super Cow was the Ayrshire from Evie Tomlinson of the well known Sandyford herd with Allstar Ringer Joybell. This two-year-old second calver, now housed at Evie’s partners Tregibby Holsteins in Wales, made the 22-hour round trip from Wales to Edinburgh all the more rewarding.

This cow, classified, maximum points – VG88 two-year-old – was described by the judge as being of exceptional quality. She was reserve interbreed champion and Exhibitor bred supreme champion at the Welsh Dairy Show.

She is sired by Blue Spruce Ringer and is currently giving 52 litres daily

The reserve was Swaites Promise Ex90 from John Adamson and Son, Swaites, Lanark. This five-year-old cow is by Swaites Double 07.

Also in the super cow line up was the Jersey champion from Brian and Michael Yates, East Logan Castle Douglas. Logan Chrome Caribbean, classified VG88, is one of only six milking Jerseys in the Logan herd of 260 Holsteins.

She has had a fantastic show season finishing reserve champion at Dairy Day, reserve interbreed at the Highland, champion at Dumfries and Ayr shows and champion at the South West Scotland Evening show.

The reserve champion Holstein cow was Dulis Silver Lustre, from the Lustre syndicate. This excellent 97 classified cow is by Seagull-bay Silver.

The reserve Jersey title went to Kerry Scott with Layward Divinely Victorious Ex92. She is a second calver and sired by River Valley Victorious.

The Red and White champion, Nethervalley Awesome Roseanne Red, came from Tregibby Holsteins in South Wales. She was bought as a calf at the Black and white sale in 2019 from Robbie and Margo Scott.

The fourth calver was red and white champion at Dairy Day in September, and reserve Holstein at the Royal Welsh in July.

Sired by Luck-E Absolute Awesome Red, she calved in June and is currently giving 45 litres.

Robbie and Margo Scott, also produced the reserve champion with Parkend Kimball Scarlet Red. This VG87 second calver is by Seagull-Bay Silver Kimball and was bought from Fife Breeders, Brian Weatherup and partners.

Champion any other breed was a Dairy Shorthorn from Shaun Dixon, Wolsingham in County Durham. Oxton Ric Wildeyes Ex91.

The reserve was a Brown Swiss cow from Johnny Lochhead, Beyond the Burn at Dumfries, Kedar Faust Espirit VG89 is by Riedland Camelot Faust.
