Residual potato levy reserves are to fund seven projects aimed at strengthening the sector, following an agreement between the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB) and GB Potatoes.
The decision, approved earlier this year by AHDB’s board, marks a significant step for the potato industry after levy payer activities were wound down. The move has garnered backing from major potato membership organisations.
Scott Walker, chief executive of GB Potatoes, said: “Since the closure of AHDB Potatoes, the sector has faced ongoing challenges, including threats from disease and restricted access to plant protection products.
“This grant will launch fresh initiatives and provide a stable platform for ongoing projects that have struggled with annual funding uncertainty. It lays the groundwork to transform key industry efforts and create a sustainable, industry-funded model critical to the future of the potato sector. We are delighted that GB Potatoes has secured this funding to support projects benefiting the entire industry.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for the sector to shape its future, tackle challenges, and build resilience.”
AHDB ceo Graham Wilkinson added: “The potato sector is vital to UK agriculture, and we are pleased to release these residual funds to support impactful projects for growers and the wider industry.”

The seven funded projects are:
- Potato Blight Project: Focuses on genetic monitoring and fungicide sensitivity to combat potato blight.
- Aphid Monitoring Project: Delivers nationwide aphid monitoring data to aid decision-making.
- Virus Management Tools Project: Supports the seed sector by joining Horticulture Crop Protection (HCP) to sustain high-grade seed production.
- Reputational Management Project: Addresses industry reputation through crisis management, media outreach, and influencer engagement.
- Bridging Information Gap Project: Provides reliable data on cultivation, varieties, and national yields.
- CIPC Residue Monitoring Project: Monitors chlorpropham (CIPC) residues to meet regulatory requirements, ensuring stores remain usable.
- Nutrient Management Updates (RB209): Revises fertiliser recommendations to reflect current technologies.
Funding Details
The £1.8m in residual levy reserves held by AHDB includes £400,000 earmarked for potential liabilities. Over three years, £1,371,880 will fund the projects, with potential for £426,238 for years four and five, contingent on review and the availability of funds.
Key support for the initiative came from organisations including NFU Scotland, NFU Cymru, the British Potato Trade Association, and the Potato Processor’s Association.
This funding is expected to transition the industry towards voluntary funding while bolstering its ability to address critical challenges.
