Why the name change?
What’s behind the decision?
And what does it mean for farmers?

In January 2024, SsangYong Motors UK, officially rebranded as KGM Motors UK, marking a pivotal shift in the company’s direction. For decades, SsangYong had been synonymous with rugged SUVs, versatile 4x4s and dependable pick-up trucks in the UK. Yet, following its acquisition by Korea’s KG Group in late 2022, the brand embarked on a journey to modernise its brand identity, align with future automotive trends, and strengthen its connection with a key customer base: the UK farming community.

A New Name, A Bold Vision
At its core, the rebranding to KGM, symbolises more than a new name and logo. It’s about balancing innovation, and futureproofing in an ever-evolving automotive landscape, whilst not forgetting its “no-nonsense” roots. The KG Group, a vast South Korean conglomerate with operations spanning chemicals, steel, media, and hospitality, seized the opportunity to expand into the automotive sector by acquiring SsangYong Motors. Their vision? To push the boundaries of what vehicles can do, utilising the very latest advancements in automotive technology.
And the move towards electrification is not a trendy buzzword for KGM; it’s a commitment to sustainability while retaining the rugged practicality that has long been the brand’s hallmark.

Seventy Years of Reliability
Though the name has changed, KGM’s dedication to producing tough, reliable vehicles remains the same. Founded in 1954 as Ha Dong-Hwan Automobile Manufacturing, the company was initially focused on producing trucks, buses and special-purpose vehicles, many of them for export. Over the decades, the business evolved, becoming SsangYong Motor Company in 1988. Through various ownership changes and collaborations with global partners, the brand continued to innovate while staying true to its roots of robust vehicles.

A Key Player in the Pick-Up Market
Few vehicles are as indispensable to farmers as the pick-up truck, and the KGM Musso is a prime example of why. While the UK’s pick-up market has shrunk in recent years due to stricter emissions regulations, KGM continues to thrive. With its 1-tonne+ payload and 3.5-tonne towing capability, the Musso is a leader in its class, capable of handling the most demanding tasks farmers face, from hauling heavy machinery to towing livestock.
In celebration of its 70th anniversary, KGM has launched the Musso Saracen Platinum, a special edition designed for pick-up enthusiasts who value both performance and style. With features like black tribal side steps, an electric roll-top, sports bars, and limited-edition features, the model blends functionality with flair—all for £34,995 (excluding VAT). It’s a workhorse that can be relied upon day in, day out.
Whilst the Rexton is not a pick-up, it would be a shame not to highlight it here. The Rexton is KGMs award-winning flagship 7-seat 4x4, and in fact, Musso derives from this vehicle. In a nutshell, Rexton represents more in every aspect. Styled inside and out with graceful detailing that complements its rugged off-road and 3.5-tonne towing capability. It has an intriguing blend of capable workhorse that can carry, pull, and wallow through mud, whilst offering comfort, safety, and style.

Investing in the Future: Electric Vehicles and Innovation
As KGM looks ahead, the brand is investing heavily in electric vehicle (EV) technology. The Korando e-Motion, launched in 2021, marked KGM’s first foray into fully electric vehicles. It was soon followed by the Torres EVX SUV in 2023, a model that’s already turning heads with its innovative design and eco-friendly credentials.
For those in the agricultural sector, the upcoming 0100 pure-EV 4x4 pick-up to be a game-changer. Set to arrive in the UK later into 2025, the 0100 is designed for urban drivers who need the strength of a pick-up but want the sustainability of an electric vehicle. It comes equipped with V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) connectors, allowing owners to power their tools directly from the vehicle—ideal for farmers working off the grid.

Expanding the Dealer Network
Rebranding is only part of KGM’s broader strategy. The company is also focused on expanding its dealer network to ensure that rural customers have easy access to its vehicles. Last year, KGM appointed 19 new dealers across the UK, some of whom have added second or even third sites to their portfolio. This growth reflects the strength of KGM’s relationships with its partners and its commitment to providing excellent service to its customers.
By the end of 2024, KGM aims to have 75-dealerships across the UK, with a focus on rural and underserved areas. For the farming community, this means more local options for purchasing and servicing vehicles, a critical factor when time and reliability are of the essence.

Why KGM Matters to the Farming Community
Farmers have always relied on vehicles that are built to last, vehicles that can withstand the pressures of daily work on the farm. KGM Motors understands these demands, and whether it’s through the Musso’s towing capabilities or the innovative features of the upcoming 0100 electric pick-up, KGM continues to cater to the needs of the farming community.
The future may be electric, but that doesn’t mean compromising on performance or reliability. KGM’s commitment to producing high-quality, durable vehicles. Whether they be powered by an internal combustion engine, or by battery technology, KGM ensures that farmers and rural businesses will continue to have the tools they need to get the job done, whether they’re hauling hay, towing a trailer, or powering their tools directly from their vehicle.
As KGM moves forward under its new identity, it remains determined to deliver value, performance, and innovation to those who need it most. For the farming community, that’s a future worth investing in.
