A farmer's son from Forfar has revealed a charming proposal he crafted for his partner using straw bales.

Ross Janoch, 32, proposed to 33-year-old Sara Robertson at South Leckaway Farm last month. Balancing his work offshore and on the farm, Ross dedicated four hours to arranging 124 straw bales to spell out, ‘Will u marry me?’

Unimpressed by the simplicity of a restaurant or holiday proposal Ross incorporated two of the main aspects of his life into one, his love for farming and for Sara, to create the romantic spectacle.

Ross said: “We were going on holiday, and I thought she would kind of expect it when we were there, but I wanted to do something different. You have a lot of time to think about things when you are bringing in bales and it just came to me.”

Starting at 4am, Ross spent four hours spelling out the big question using 124 bales, admitting “I had them all-ready for putting onto the trailer but then when the idea came, I had to bring some from the next field to get it all finished.”

In cahoots with his mother, Ross managed to get Sara down to the field under the pretence of loose cattle, to her shock and amazement Ross, who was supposed to be heading offshore was there waiting. He said: “Originally the plan was to see it from further away, but our fields are too flat, so I got Sara to walk in-and-out of it to spell it out, luckily she got it pretty quickly and said yes.”

Ross, who runs a mixed arable and beef farm with a herd of Charolais cattle with his father, has known Sara for many years. The couple has been together since August 2023.
