Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC) has been granted degree-awarding powers, becoming the first educational provider in nearly two decades to be awarded the right.

Previously students from SRUC institutes had to attain their qualification though the Universities of Glasgow or Edinburgh. But now SRUC can themselves award qualifications such as degrees or taught masters itself, marking a change for the college that can trace its history back over 125 years.

Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP) were conferred by the Privy Council and approved by the Scottish Parliament.

SRUC’s first degree course will be an BVSci in Veterinary Science, with the first cohort of students starting at its new School of Veterinary Medicine in Aberdeen this week.

Professor Wayne Powell, Principal and Chief Executive of SRUC, said: “Gaining Taught Degree Awarding Powers is a truly historic day for SRUC.

“I would like to thank the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, who were hugely supportive of our application process.”

SRUC ranks in the top five UK institutions for studying animal science and agriculture in the much-respected Guardian University rankings and was awarded the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for the second time earlier this year.

Professor Powell went on to say: “Our five-year strategy, launching within a few months, will show our ongoing commitment to developing new ways to thrive through collaboration – driving innovative new ways of working between business, government, communities and academia.

“More than ever before, SRUC is in control of its own destiny. Gaining degree awarding powers really is just the beginning.”

SRUC offers full-time and part-time courses from college level through National Certificate all the way up to PhD level and has campuses in Edinburgh, West Lothian, Dumfries and Galloway, Aberdeen and Fife.
