An absence in trade from Northern Ireland and Eire due to Bluetongue restrictions meant averages fell at the annual Perth Ram Society sale of shearlings and ram lambs.

It was a reliance on strong commercial buyers that dominated the shearling trade with a clearance of 95%. Matthew Hamilton and son Matthew, Woolfords, West Calder, topped the sale at £8000 for a shearling. A son of last year’s top-priced £20,000 Woolfords, he is out of a £2200 Auchnacloich bred ewe. Mairi Paterson and son Robert were the final bidders for their Craigneich flock, Dunruchan, Crieff.

The same home sold another for £6000 to Stephen Duncan and son Stephen, Achdregnie, Glenlivet.

Sired by a £4000 Woolfords, he is out of a ewe by a £3000 Achdregnie tup.

The pre-sale reserve champion also came out of the Woolfords pen and realised £5000 when selling to David Baillie, Calla, Lanark. Sired by a 5500gns Conway tup, he is out of a 12,000gns Conway daughter.

Another shearling by the same sired sold to Neil Kydd, Glenhead, Glenisla, for £2500.

Rounding off the Woolfords top lots at £2800 was a shearling sired by a 14,000gns Sam Adams tup and bred from a £2200 Auchnacloich ewe. He headed to Glendamph, Glenisla with Bert Grant.

The same buyer purchased the shearling reserve champion for £4800 from Phil Stewart, Bomakelloch, Banffshire. This boy is by a £600 Eastmill and out of a £1000 Doldy bred dam.

It proved a good day for Archie McKinnon and family when their top-priced Auchnacloich lot realised £4000. A grandson of a £7000 Avonside and out of a ewe sired by a £13,000 Woolfords, he is off to his new home in Glenkindie with Sandy and Stephen Smith, Scarhill.

After their successful day selling the Hamiltons, Woolfords, went to £3500 for a shearling from Alan Petrie’s Maryton flock, Kirriemuir – an opportunity for them to buy back their own genetics as he is a grandson of a £10,000 Woolfords tup.

Two shearlings then made £3000. One was from the Smiths of Scarhill, which was purchased by James Brown, Corriecravie House, Isle of Arran. By a £18,000 Calla sire, he is out of a £1000 Woolfords daughter.

On the same money was a ram from John Shearer and sons, Gavin and Neil, Hillhead of Morinsh, which sold to Cadogan Estates. A son of a £650 Auchnacloich tup, he is bred from a £7000 Achdregnie sired ewe.

Duncan Beaton, Newmill of Inshewan, Memus, sold a son of a 1900gns Stewart Adams for £2500 to Pamela Nicol’s Eastmill flock, Glenisla.

Mairi and Robert Paterson’s Craigneich pen also achieved £2500 when the hammer again fell to the Hamiltons, Woolfords. This was a home-bred son of a 2000gns Brian Curran tup and out of a £5000 Hillhead of Morinsh sired ewe.

Unfortunately, it was poorer trade for the ram lambs, of which only 65% were sold.

Trade peaked at £4000 for the reserve lamb champion from David Baillie, Calla. Sired by a £4500 Achdregnie tup and out of a 8500gns gimmer bought from Thomas Harkin, he sold to the Hamilton family, Woolfords.

Woolfords also bought the second top priced lamb from Neil Kydd, Glenhead, at £2800. He is by a home-bred sire that goes back to Glendamph bloodline.

Another realising £2800 was Scott Robertson’s sole Avonside lot from Dufftown, Morayshire. Sired by a £7000 Woolfords and out of a 5500gns Conway bred mother, he sold to Elizabeth Johnston, Little Kilmundie, Glamis.

The pre-sale champion came from Hillhead of Morinsh, which made £2500 when selling in a two-way split to Stephen Duncan, Achdregnie and Scott Robertson, Dufftown. He is by their shearling that sold for £3000 and out of a £3500 Woolfords gimmer.

averages:

152 shearling rams, £1064 (-£179 for four fewer sold). 37 ram lambs, £716 (-£496 for one less sold).
