The Scottish Belted Galloway Club’s Open Day at Larghill, Crocketford, Dumfries, by kind permission of Ian, Debbie, and Alasdair Marshall, proved a huge success.
The day began with a warm welcome from Ian, who shared information about the history of Larghill while guests enjoyed home baking and refreshments.
Highlight of the morning was the stock judging, with Caroline Montgomery skilfully assessing a pen of four Belted Galloway heifers. Despite their uniform quality presenting a challenge, the setup allowed for clear viewing and the judging was both thorough and engaging.

The judging continued with a pen of Cheviot ewes, presented in a well-constructed ring. Judith Cowie’s expertise was evident as she placed them in order. The evaluations extended to Cheviot gimmers, Mule gimmers, and Texel cross Cheviot prime lambs, sparking discussions among the participants.
A fun twist was added with a weight-guessing game, where attendees estimated the weight of two ewes, two gimmers, and three lambs before heading to the shed for a hog roast.
Post-lunch, the excitement continued with a tractor and trailer tour of the Belted Galloways and other cattle. While the Belted Galloways were initially hesitant, they soon warmed up to the visitors. Alasdair, with valuable support from his father Ian, provided insightful commentary on the cattle.
The tour also included a visit to the Shorthorns up the steep Larghill, offering panoramic views across the Solway, Cumbria, the Dalswinton wind turbines, and Castle Douglas.
A prize-giving ceremony capped off the day.
