Engineers at the CNH tractor plant in St Valentin and TU Wien have unveiled a hydrogen fuel cell-powered STEYR concept tractor.
Based on a standard STEYR 4140 tractor it uses approximately 15kg to 16kg of dry biomass to produce hydrogen equivalent to around 3.5l of diesel. The power unit only emits water vapour, while maintaining the power needed for demanding agricultural work.
It is equipped with a 14 kWh high-voltage battery which develops 95 kW, matching its diesel counterpart. The fuel cell and electric drive systems replace the diesel engine, and the fuel tank is substituted with a compressed hydrogen storage system and battery.
