Dairy processor Müller is calling on farmers to join the third cohort of its Next Generation initiative, a programme designed to enhance supply chain resilience and reduce carbon emissions.

First launched in 2018, Müller Next Generation is a three-year programme targeting farmers aged 25-40. The initiative aims to develop the skills of 25 farmers, focusing on sustainability and profitability in the dairy industry.

It provides farmers with support to improve supply chain collaboration, animal welfare, responsible sourcing and reductions in environmental impact. This initiative is a key component of Müller’s broader sustainability action plan, which aims to reduce emissions on supplying farms by 30% by 2030.

Müller Next Generation offers tailored workshops, farm visits, keynote speakers, and tours of Müller sites. The programme covers various focus areas including environmental sustainability, leadership, market analysis, succession planning, marketing, communication, and business improvement planning.

The group will assemble three times a year, providing a platform for farmers to exchange best practices and knowledge.

Richard Collins, head of agriculture at Müller Milk and Ingredients, stated: “We need to continue to tackle carbon emissions, secure the next generation of talent, and drive supply chain resilience.

“We incentivise farmers to tackle the issues which we know are important for our customers and consumers and the Next Generation initiative is further evidence of the action we’re taking to make a difference.”

He added: “We’re excited to welcome applications for the next round of future elite dairy farmers.”

Applications for the program close on July 26, 2024, with the first meeting scheduled for autumn.
