Farmers and agricultural contractors are being urged to take extra precautions before this year’s harvest to prevent disastrous farm fires.

In 2022 and 2023, more than 90% of combine harvester fire claims were reported to rural insurer NFU Mutual in July and August.

NFU Mutual's rural affairs specialist, Hannah Binns, emphasised that combine fires can spread rapidly through growing crops, threatening neighbouring fields and properties. Regular maintenance and cleaning of machines, particularly removing chaff and dust, can significantly reduce fire risks.

With the harvest season approaching, farmers are reminded to take all possible steps to reduce fire risks in combines, balers, and tractors. NFU Mutual is increasing its premium discount for machines fitted with approved suppressor systems from 15% to 25% through September.

NFU Mutual's agricultural engineering team member, Craig Codling, noted that even well-maintained combines can catch fire due to overheating bearings, broken fuel pipes, or electrical short-circuits. Tested fire suppressant systems have been shown to significantly reduce the risk of serious fires.

Calls have also been made for legislation requiring manufacturers to install fire suppression systems as standard on agricultural vehicles to alleviate the burden on farmers.
