Fierce competition to produce the best eating quality sirloin in the Asda Steak tasting competition, saw entries forward from eight finalists at the Royal Highland Show, with the supreme being the result of a steer from W and A Henderson, Kettlehill Farm, Milgavie.

The event – made up of sirloin steaks from the retail giant's Extra Special Aberdeen Angus 30-day dry aged range, was topped by entry from a 24-month-old steer that weighed 403kg and graded as R-4-.

All finalist steaks were judged after the live cooking and Master Butchery display from Jim McPhie, one of ABP’s own Master Butchers.

After a very close count, second and third places were level on points and had to be separated by a tie breaker where the number of 'Champion Steak' votes was used to separate what was described as 'two excellent steaks'.

In the end, the sirloin from a 25-month-old home-bred Aberdeen-Angus cross heifer that weighed 330kg and graded R-4+ from John McIntosh, Genoch Mains, Stranraer, was announced reserve.
