Three tractor sizes and three transmission choices: Deutz-Fahr 6C series with Powershift, RVShift or TTV

There are many Scottish arable, livestock and mixed farms that depend on tractors in the 120-150hp bracket, whether as the largest machine on a mid-sized unit or a capable all-rounder on a bigger business. That means they require a wide range of specifications to suit widely-differing needs – and this is why Deutz-Fahr offers three transmission options for its 6C series tractors, including an innovative recent introduction.

Powered by in-house FARMotion 45 Stage V four-cylinder engines with electronically controlled common rail fuel injection, eVisco viscostatic fan and PowerCore air filters, the 6C range comprises three models of 120 (6115C), 129 (6125C) and 137hp (6135C), rising to 126, 136 and 143hp when the PTO is in use or at road speeds above 15km/hr.

Transmission options include a powershift offering up to five manually selected speeds, four work ranges, three powershift steps and a powershuttle, plus Speed Matching function and a programmable Automatic Powershift (APS). There’s also the long-established Deutz-Fahr TTV continuously-variable transmission, which offers a stepless speed range from 0.02 to 50 kph.

But one of the highlights of the 6C is the third transmission option, the new RVshift. Made in-house, this 20 forward/16 reverse unit is an innovative full powershift unit, with virtual operating ratios that create a powershift experience. All speeds are selectable without using the clutch, and with torque uninterrupted during changes, suiting heavy draft and haulage work where maintaining momentum is crucial.

Using the RVshift controller, a three-dimension joystick situated on the driver’s multifunction armrest, the operator nudges forward to upshift one gear at a time, or holds it in place to progress through the gears. Pressing a joystick button while it is held in the forward position allows the driver to skip-shift progressively through the gears. To downshift the joystick is pulled backwards, while holding it to the left activates cruise control at the tractor’s current speed.

How does it work in practice? There are field and transport operating modes, selectable via armrest buttons, and operators can set the gear ratios selectable within these, and set each range’s start-off gear. Via the joystick it’s possible to select gears manually, but the Automatic Power Shift function can be activated to allow the tractor to choose the ideal gear and engine speed for maximum efficiency. A creeper option adds speeds down to 20 metres/hr, while a Stop&Go function holds the tractor on slopes without the brakes, only moving forwards once the foot throttle is pressed.

Deutz-Fahr 6C series specified with RVshift (or with TTV) are fitted with the brand’s TopVision Pro cab, with specification including InfoCentre dashboard display and Hydro Silent cushioning or optional mechanical cab suspension. With a rear linkage lift capacity of 5,000kg and a 7,000kg option, plus a 3,000kg front linkage option, the 6C tractors also feature hydraulic flow rates from 55 litres/min on the smallest model, rising to 90 litres/min on others, plus a 120 litres/min load-sensing pump option. The result is a powerful and capable tractor in a compact package with an innovative transmission that brings something new to this power sector.
