A top price of 4700gns was achieved for an in-calf heifer from the Ury Maid family at the second annual reduction sale of pedigree Beef Shorthorns from Gerald Turton’s Upsall herd from Thirsk at Skipton.

Star attraction was Ury Maid X1479 of Upsall, a March, 2020-born dark roan daughter of Grenadier of Upsall, bred from the Dingo of Upsall-sired Ury Maid X963 – a former Great Yorkshire Show champion. A grand-daughter of the Australian bull, Belmore Patriach, she sold in calf to Royal Hunter of Upsall to Mark Day, Middlesborough.

Second top price was 4600gns paid for the 17-month-old red and little white bull, Regent of Upsall, by Mandalong of Upsall – a son of the prolific Firefox of Upsall, out of Secret X977 of Upsall Ex92, another Dingo daughter. With breed plan figures in the top 1%, Regent was knocked down to RG Thompson, Whitby.

The 24 maiden heifers brought out by stockman George McCulloch and his wife Maureen, sold to 4100gns for another 17-month-old roan, Tessa X1578 of Upsall, also by Mandalong, out of the Grenadier daughter, Tessa X1198 of Upsall, a half sister to Dingo. Final bidder was Andrew Thorner, Barkisland, Calderdale.

Cows with calves sold to 3500gns to average £2598; in-calf heifers peaked at 4700gns to level at £3045 and maiden heifers were topped at 4100gns to balance out at £2401.
