HOW AND when the Russian attack on Ukraine will end is still to be decided – but already the country's farmers are facing the monumental problem of fields riddled with unexploded ordinance and burnt metal.
Right now, there are the obvious wrecks of downed aircraft and crippled tanks, alongside abandoned artillery and vehicles, littering the countryside. Then there is the issue of explosives, left deliberately in the form of mines, or accidentally when shells and bombs have failed to detonate or been discarded.
Aside from these life-threatening devices, the productive fields of Europe's bread basket will be serving up an unwanted crop of metal shrapnel and contaminants for years to come.
The photos and video shown here were reportedly taken near the city of Mykolaiv, Ukraine, in fields sown with winter wheat.
