PORK EXPORTS from Britain are down on the year due to the fallout from Brexit, but there has been some growth in shipments to non-Eu countries.

A total of 177,638 tonnes of UK pork has been exported around the world so far this year, worth £304 million to the UK pork sector. The amount going to countries outside of the EU increased by 30%, compared to the same period last year.

The lion’s share of that went to China, with 83,000 tonnes shipped between January and June, worth almost £150 million. Other markets in Asia, such as the Philippines provided a boost with exports rising from 2800 tonnes to more than 14,300 – valued at £22 million.

Also on the up, but to a lesser extent, shipments to America increased by 27% to 3348 tonnes, worth almost £10 million, and Australia took 1613 tonnes of UK pork.

AHDB Head of Asia Pacific Jonathan Eckley said: “While the EU remains an important trading partner for the UK, it is imperative that we continue to identify and open a broad portfolio of markets further afield and our ongoing relations with markets such as Asia is providing a hugely important boost for our red meat sectors here in the UK.”
