A record number of dairy breeders and enthusiasts descended on the Wright family's Berry Holme Farm for the Premier Herd Open Day, hosted by Holstein UK.

The family has been farming at Berry Holme since 1919 and registered their first Friesian in 1965. David, who manages the farm, joined the team full time in the early 2000’s and is now the fourth-generation to farm at Berry Holme.

The 140-cow milking Berryholme herd, plus followers, is nationally recognised for exceptional breeding, confirmation, production and their extremely high standard of health and welfare.

Milk yield averages are 10,850kg at 4.31%BF and 3.28%P with a calving interval of 398 days. The family began classifying in 2001 and the herd now boasts 86% VG or Excellent-classifications with 45 Ex and 72 VG.

Having won the Premier Herd award in their centenary year, David Wright, wife Naomi and his father Francis, were delighted to welcome guests for the Open Day near Kendal.

Holstein UK president John Jamieson said, “When you turn into the driveway, you think you’ve landed in God’s country and if we ever wondered what Holstein cows would look like in heaven then what we see today at Berryholme is the perfect example.”

The herd sale which took place on farm the same day, saw a crowd of more than 1000 look on to see the 35 catalogued lots sell to a top of 27,000gns for a yearling heifer from the Flo cow family, to average in excess of £5500.
