DESPITE SOME horrendous wet weather, a good show of stock was forward for Colmonell and Ballantrae Agricultural Society's annual show at Boghouse Farm, Colmonell, last weekend.

The overall judge, David Little, Mahaar Cottage, Castle Kennedy, awarded the champion of champions ticket to the winner of the beef cattle classes, Islay Mist, a Charolais cross heifer shown by young Jennifer Hyslop, Balluskie, Barrhill. Well-known throughout the show circuit, this heifer, bred on Islay by the RSPB, is by Cyglen Stirling, out of a pure bred Limousin cow. She was fifth at the Highland, fourth at Ayr, champion at Dalrymple and inter-breed beef leader at Stranraer.
Reserve overall was another leading show animal, this time the Texel champion from Angus McColm, Crailloch, Port William. His show stopper was the home-bred two-shear tup Crailloch McCoist, that stood inter-breed sheep at Stranraer.
Home-bred Texels from the Crailloch flock also went on to win the inter-breed group of three at the show.
A particularly strong section of Blackface sheep, up 20 more entries than the previous show in 2006, was led by a ewe lamb from the Kay family, Gass, Straiton. Taking them to the top was Roxy, a ewe lamb by a £12,000 Glen, Innerleithen, bought last year at Lanark, out of the home-bred show ewe, Lexi, by a £2200 Glenrath.

See Aug 16 issue for the full report.
