Ewen Stewart and Son are a long-established haulage firm who have been delivering straw, animal feed, and much more all over Scotland for over 38 years. When Ewen Stewart Jnr. and Kirsty, his now wife decided they needed a house of their own it made perfect sense to build on the family land near Comrie, Perthshire where the family business is run from.
Ewen was initially concerned that planning permission might be difficult, so he engaged the services of local architect firm James Denholm Partnership at an early stage to assist with this. They were originally denied Planning permission, however, with good advice and persistence from their architects approval was eventually granted.
Ewen Stewart and Sons started delivering timber frame houses for Rob Roy Homes in1992 and because of this Ewen had seen first hand the quality of the materials going to the site and judging by the feedback he heard from various trade and one-off projects around the country knew they would get a high-quality product and excellent customer service.
Rob Roy Homes take time to discuss the specifications and the needs of each individual customer along with the very important subject of budget and after that provides a detailed quotation. Rob Roy Homes have a purpose-built factory next to their offices in Comrie where all of the manufacturing is carried out.
Building your own home from scratch can be a daunting experience, however, with over 30 years in the Self-Build industry, Rob Roy Homes’ seasoned team ensures that every customer receives a comprehensive and accurate service from beginning to end, forming a partnership with each customer to assist from the beginning until the end of their build project.
Ewen and Kirsty met with the staff at Rob Roy Homes and discussed the details of their new house at this stage there were some small changes made to the design to help with maximising space and saving some cost too.
The timber frame package includes the timber frame structure of the house which has been engineered to a standard well in excess of the prevailing engineering codes and has been made from imported structural timber. Imported timber is relevant because it is sourced from countries colder than our own where the trees grow more slowly meaning the timber is more stable when put into the warm environment of a new house. All of the timber used by RRH is then kiln dried and double pressure treated to prevent rot and risk of insect attack.
The windows for the house whether they be timber or timber with aluminium cladding or upvc are also supplied as part of the package and again are supplied to a standard that meets the requirements for severe exposure meaning that they will keep the house warm and the weather out.
All insulation, plasterboard, stairs, internal doors, and finishings are supplied and again this can all be tailored to suit the tastes of each customer.
Ewen and Kirsty first broke ground in January 2021 the foundations were then laid, and they started building the kit on 1st April. From breaking ground to moving into their new home it took 13 months. Rob Roy Homes works very closely with the customer and the builder to ensure deliveries of the different kit components suit their schedule. Every job is looked at on an individual basis to work around the site access requirements and build schedules. The deliveries usually come in 3 parts which include Structural components that will get you to a wind and watertight stage, roughings, and finishings.
Whether it’s external design, internal layout, durability, sustainability, and/or originality, Rob Roy Homes will work with every customer’s concept and budget, from those starting from scratch or like Ewen and Kirsty who came up with architects drawing and clear ideas of what they wanted.
