Demand for Roussin sheep sold at the Pedigree Sheep Fair at Carlisle, soared with shearling ram and gimmer averages doubling on the year and for more sold.

While there are never many forward for this event, prices peaked at 2100gns for the fourth prize shearling from Welsh breeder S Hughes’ Garn flock from Ty Cerrig, Gwynedd. He is sired by a ram bought in Normandy and was knocked down to Billy MacFarlane and sons Alfie and Joe, Drumgrange, Patna, Ayr.

Mr Hugh also sold the first prize shearling and reserve overall for 1000gns to Livesey Farming, Melrose and he topped the females with his overall champion, a gimmer that made 1500gns selling to Messrs Armstrong, Alnwick. The second prize gimmer again from the Garn flock made 800gns to Q and E Limond, Knocknaib, Cumnock.

Fellow Welsh breeders, J Jones, Blaenaucaron, Tregaron, sold the second prize shearling for 2000gns to Messrs Fleming, Newton Stewart.

The small but selective entry of Badger Face Texels peaked at 1000gns for a shearling ram from Andrew Dunlop, Corstane, Broughton, Biggar. Corstane Endevour is sired by Hunters Dizzee Rascal, out of Corstane Hollyhock, and headed home with Messrs Davies, Newtown, Powys.

Females reached 650gns for the ewe lamb, Woodies Firework ET, from Stuart Wood, Broadwater, Skene. She is sired by the 3200gns High Ploughlands Ernie, and was knocked down to Messrs Wright, Girvan.

Averages: Roussin – 13 shearling rams, £959.53 (+£514.03 for eight more); six gimmers, £761.25 (+£338.25 for three more); 10 ewe lambs, £300.30.
