A substitute ram lamb from Stuart Wood and son Murray’s Woodies flock from Broadwater, Westhill, Aberdeenshire, stole the show on the first day at Carlisle, securing the reserve overall championship and the top price of 25,000gns.

Woodies Karate Kid, which the father-and-son duo initially had planned to keep for a shearling, is a late January-born ET, bred from the 2020 private purchase Bailey Brook Diamond which in turn was sired by the 7200gns Woodies Snoop Dog. The sire is Vickys Gladiator which has bred sons and daughters to 8000gns.

Karate Kid sold back up to Aberdeenshire with the Ingram family, Logie Durno, Inverurie.

The second prize lamb to him, Faughhill Kaiser ET from Grant Maxwell, Melrose, sold next at 16,000gns in a three-way split to Lanarkshire breeders Alfie and Tommy Taylor, Heatheryhall, Lanark; Andrew Baillie, Carstairs Mains, Carstairs; and Neil Laing buying for his children Euan, Fiona and Kirsten’s Perryflatts flock from Biggar. For their money, they get the fourth prize lamb at the Royal Highland which is bred from Heatheryhall Glitter, a Buckles Dark Dawn-sired ewe that was champion at Lanark in 2022, when she was purchased for 5800gns. The sire is Ainstable Javelin.

Rosie Boden’s Mellor Vale flock from Stockport, Cheshire, also had a good day when her third lamb, Mellor Vale King Kong ET, was knocked down at 10,000gns selling to Aberdeenshire breeders, Alan Miller buying for the Lurg flock from Inverurie and Stuart Wood’s Woodies flock from Westhill. Backed by the best of genetics, King Kong, an early January-born lamb, is bred from the 29,000gns Lakeview Golden Girl by Ainstable Factotum and sired by the 20,000gns Lipley Hugo Boss.

Mr Wood was also involved in another two big sales. He forked out 7000gns in a three-way partnership with his cousin Richard, Kingledores, Tweedsmuir, and Cameron Cormack of the Dunrod flock from Oxnam, Jedburgh, to buy Gordon and Lynsey Carroll’s Edendiack King, from the farm based at Gartly, Huntly. Another ET-bred lamb, he is the result of a flush from the Buckles Fury-sired Logie Durno Hannah which was bought privately. The sire is the 16,000gns Lurg Gino.

Woodies, Kingledores, Heatheryhall and Lurg also teamed up to buy Geffens Kanye West ET at 6000gns. This lamb, consigned by Louie Van Geffins, Alum Grange, Carlton in Cleveland, Stokesley, is a son of Buckles Jaegarbomb and bred from the Buckles Espresso daughter, Buckles Grace.
