Potential buyers and spectators watched the North Country Cheviot lambs in the ring at Lairg auction's annual sale.

Lairg

Reduced numbers on the year due to the poor weather at lambing time, saw 11,484 lambs forward for United Auctions’ sale on Tuesday.

In all, 8394 wedder lambs averaged £83.37, up £14.89 on the year, selling to a top of £122 for North Country Cheviots from from Eriboll, Caithness.

The 3089 ewe lambs cashed in at £97.72, up £13.48, with top prices of £520 and £370 paid for black North Country Cheviots from H and M MacDonald, Bhlar Mhor, Kinbrace.

Store lambs saw a £19.99 increase on the year at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ opening sale to average £90.06

The sale of 5813 head incorporated entries from the Dunbeath, Bettyhill, Forsinard and North West Sutherland areas, saw Cheviot ewe lambs (880) average £89.25 (+£23.06) having sold to £210 for Black Cheviots from Blarmhor, Achentoul.

Cheviot wedder lambs (2766) averaged £83.98 (+£18.39) with a top price of £132 from Lower Westerdale, Thurso, while cross lambs (1676) sold to £142 for Suffolks from Melvich Hotel Farm, Melvich, to average £101.31 (+£20.90).

Prime lambs (336) levelled at 296.4p having sold to 321.9p per kg for 48kg Texels from Quarryside, Castletown and £163.50 for 58kg Charolais from 31 Larel.

The 155 feeding ewes and rams reached £205 for Texels from Bardnaclavan, Bridge of Westfield, to average £137.55.
