More than £460,000 changed hands at the dispersal of Rob and Alun Bennett's Plasucha Texel flock at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, which saw two record prices - 35,000gns for a ewe lamb and 28,000gns for an aged ewe.
The sale from the Powys-based flock established 16 years ago, was topped by that record priced ewe lamb purchased by Charlie Boden and family buying for the Sportsmans flock from Stockport, Bury. Bred from the best of genetics, this February-born entry is the result of a flush from a ewe by the 20,000gns Plasucha Boss Man that produced the 10,000gns Evenflow and sired by Sportsmans Express, a ram bought at Lanark in 2021 in partnership with the Cowal flock for 75,000gns. The lamb is also an ET sister to the first prize ewe lamb at the 2022 Royal Highland Show and the Royal Welsh.
The first prize ewe lamb at the Royal Highland from the same flush, made 18,000gns selling in a two-way split to Peter Stubbs, Meiford, Powys and Nick Legge, buying for the Thornbury flock from Westwood Park, Leominster, Herefordshire.
Matthew Ellis of the Cressage flock from Kilochan, Shropshire, bought red ticket holding ewe lamb from the Royal Welsh, bred the exact same way as the previous two lots, at 10,000gns.
Another ewe lamb by Sportmans Express made 15,000gns selling to Johnny Cubitt, Ballymena, Co Antrim. An ET sister to the 22,000gns Fireball, she is bred from a ewe by Teiglum Braveheart.
Her ET sister, a March-born lamb later made 8000gns to Mr Legge buying on his own. Also heading home to the Thornbury flock at 4000gns was a three-year-old by Boss Man, bred from a ewe by Young Gun. She changed hands with a recipient ewe carrying a single embryo by Fireball.
Second top price was 28,000gns paid for the dam of the 22,000gns Fireball, a lamb that stood reserve champion at Lanark and sold to Allanfauld, Haymount, Hilltop and the Strathbogie flocks, in August last year. This two-crop ewe is the result of a flush from a ewe by Brackenridge Young Gun and sired by Teiglum Braveheart She changed hands with a recipient ewe carrying a single embryo by the 50,000gns Okehall Fireball, to Stuart Barclay, buying for the Harestone flock from Insch.
In-lamb gimmers peaked at 12,000gns for the fifth prize winner at the Royal Welsh, in July. She was bred from a ewe by Sportsmans A Star that goes back to a 20,000gns Auldhouseburn female and sired by the Millhouse Cyclone son, Plasucha Dark Knight. The buyers were Robin Orr and his daughter Caroline, Halbeath, Dunfermline.
Keith and Andrew Campbell, Overburns, Lamington, Biggar, also got in on the action, forking out 5500gns for a March 2020-born ewe by Boss Man, bred from a Brackenridge Young Gun daughter. An ET sister to the dam of the Highland and Royal Welsh Show ewe lamb winners and the 4500gns Donny Brasco, she sold with a recipient ewe carrying a single embryo to the 50,000gns Okehall Fireball.
Two lots sold for 5000gns, with the first being a 2021-born female bred from a Brackenridge Young Gun daughter and sired by Midlock Dynamo. She sold in lamb to Jeff Teward of the New View flock from Darlington, Co Durham.
Matching that 5000gns sale was a ewe lamb bred from the same dam. February-born and sired by Sportmans Express, she landed a red ticket at Oswestry Show and sold to Irish breeders, Messrs Murphy, Claremorris, Co Mayo.
The most influential ewe in the flock, a 2017-born entry by Young Gun that up until the sale had bred progeny valued at in excess of £60,000 and the dam of the two previous lots made 4800gns. Bred from a Stainton ewe by Anglezarke Uno, she sold with a recipient ewe carrying a single embryo to Fireball, to Stuart Barclay.
Another eight lots made 4000gns of which four were recipient ewes carrying single embryos purchased by Charlie Boden and family, Sportsmans. The result progeny will be full ET brothers/sisters to the 35,000gns ewe lamb purchased by Sportsmans.
Heading up to Ross-shire at the same price with Mike Renwick, Westermoy, was an in-lamb gimmer by Midlock Dynamo, bred from a ewe by Young Gun.
Steven Smith from Castell Caereinion, near Welshpool also forked out 4000gns for another gimmer by Boss Man bred from a Young Gun daughter. She changed hands with recipient ewe carrying a single embryo by Fireball.
An in-lamb gimmer by Auldhouseburn Dash of Clash, bred from a Plausucha Corker-sired dam, was another to hit 4000gns when purchased by S Beachell, Beswick Hall, Driffield.
Later a ewe lamb bred from the dam of the 35,000gns ewe lamb matched the 4000gns sale when selling to James Pritchard, Evistones, Newcastle upon Tyne. Her sire is Hope Valley Drago.
