Craig and Teen Malone, from Cardenden, were top of the tree in the cattle section at last week’s Scottish Premier Meat Exhibition, with ‘an almost perfect’ carcase of beef.
Held at ABP’s meat plant at Bridge of Allan and run by the Scottish National Fat Stock Club, the event was sponsored by Marks & Spencer. The 31st event attracted 330 entries across the wide spectrum of M&S contract cattle and sheep, plus a young producers’ section.
The Malones had previously won the live section of this on two occasions, but this time lifted the trophy on the carcase side of things with their reserve live champion, an almost pure Limousin heifer that had been bred by WJ and EC Stevenson, Coilavoulin, Pitlochry, having been bought from them back in February in the store ring. The husband-and-wife team are more used to successfully bringing out cows and heifers with calves at foot for sale and only usually finish about 40 head per year. Indeed, Willie Stevenson said that he had hoped to buy this heifer back with a calf at foot! The top carcase had killed out at 63.6%, when hanging up at 394.1kg and grading E4L.

Runner-up for the top beef award was Wilson Peters, Cuilt Farmhouse, Monzie, who got close to the top honours with the top Angus cross steer, which he’d bought from Julian Steele, Goddens, Glencarse. Hanging up it weighed 391.8kg, with a grade of E3 and a KO of 62.4%.
This one had also been the male champion live, with further honours going to Mr Peters for the live champion, a home-bred Limousin cross British Blue which had been placed third on the hook.
Best pure-bred Angus was a beast from Matt and Heather Currie, Skewbridge, Mouswald, while the award for the best carcase suited to the Italian market was won by Willie Purdon, Stravenhouse, Carluke.
Taking the trophy among the cows was Daniel Hyslop, Pumplaburn, Moffat, with a British Blue that killed out with a carcase weight of 541.7kg.
The sheep section was led by John Hall, of R Hall and Son, Inglewood Edge, Dalston, Carlisle. He’s been live champion nine times and best carcase several times mostly with, as this time, an almost pure Beltex. This lamb hung up at 21.4kg, graded E3L and killed out at 56.9%.
NFUS president Martin Kennedy, Lurgan, Aberfeldy, was runner-up for the top prize with a home-bred lamb by an Easter Ochtermuthill Beltex sire and out of a Millenium Blue ewe – the cross between a Beltex and a Bleu du Maine. First in the live judging, it weighed 21.2kg on the hook, grading at E2.
The big Blackface lamb section was won by Alex and John Paul, Ballingall Mill, Leslie, Fife. Starring for them was a home-bred lamb bred from one of their 550 ewes which was giving them their first win in this section. It hung up at 20.5kg, grading R3H.
Alistair and Alan Maclarty of the Firm of Shawhead operation at Newmains, Douglas, took the reserve Blackface title with one that weighed 19.5kg when hung up, and grading R3L.
Kim Stretch, from Cuilt Farmhouse, was champion in the Cheviot section with a lamb bred by Monzie Farms, but bought by her earlier this year specially for this job. It had also been first in the live section and hung up at 20.5kg, with a grade of U3L.
That was ahead of David Smith’s entry from North Boig, New Cumnock. It also graded at U3L and was just a fraction lighter at 20.2kg.
The same home was also reserve in the native cross section.
Winning that, however, was a Suffolk cross Charollais/Beltex from David Cunningham, Walkerdyke, Strathaven, which was giving the family unit its biggest success in this competition.
This animal was on the hook at 18.9kg, grading U3L.
