Ayrshire-based show calf breeders, Shona and Alan Stevenson of the Laird family’s Sunnyside and Carbello Farms, produced the champion at Harrison and Hetherington’s Kirkby Classic sale of potential show and store cattle.
The sale at Kirkby Stephen attracted an entry of 498 and saw their show stopper, a nine-month-old Limousin steer, selected by the judge, Paul Tippetts, Shropshire, sell for £3000 to Messrs Naylor, Kirk Langley.
The reserve winner, the second prize Limousin steer from John Smith-Jackson, Hightown, Haltwhistle, made £2700 to Messrs Laws, Leyburn.
The sale leader was the first prize unhaltered British Blue heifer, a nine-month-old from Messrs Sedgley, Low Bank House, Carnforth, purchased by Messrs Park, Kirklands Farm, Ireton.
Also selling for £3000 was the first prize haltered British Blue heifer, a seven-month-old from Messrs Pedley, Oaktree Farm, Carnforth, that was knocked down to Messrs Parkin, Scunthorpe.
Just behind, on £2800, Messrs Wilkinson, Ivy Farm, Leyburn, sold a seven-month-old Limousin heifer to Messrs Naylor, Kirk Langley.
The 61 show cattle sold to average £2218.18.
Overall averages were also up in the store cattle section with steers cashing in at £1488.08 (+£262.70 on the year) and heifers at £1423.75 (+£245.46). The overall average was £1457.23 (+£250.38) and for 69 more sold.
In all, 23 store cattle sold between £2000 and £3200, and 120 cattle sold between £1600 and £3200 with a majority of these being eight to 12 months old.
