A surge in sales of red meat and dairy is expected for the weekend’s Coronation of King Charles.
According to AHDB, an increase in food spend is predicted for the street parties and barbecues expected as part of the royal celebrations.
At the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, last year, burger sales increased by 50% with figures from Kantar revealing an extra 853,000kg of beef was purchased across the UK during the celebratory week.
Sausage rolls were also a firm favourite, with volumes up 30%, followed by a 28% rise in pork pie purchases and a 9% increase in sausages sold.
Fresh cream sales were also well up for the Jubilee week, with an additional 724,000 litres sold – a rise of 33% compared to an average week in 2022 – and chees sales improved, with an extra 228,000kg purchased – up 2%.
The Coronation also coincides with the return of the AHDB’s month-long ‘Love BBQ’ campaign, which encourages consumers to fire up their grills and try British-produced pork, beef, lamb and chicken.
Ken Hom’s Coronation roast rack of lamb with Asian-style marinade has been announced as one of the official Coronation dishes, hence analysts are predicting a rise in sales of sheep meat.
