Increased demand for easy-calving suckler cows ensured a buoyant trade for Salers cattle breeders at the society’s breed sale at Castle Douglas, where bull averages soared by more than £1000 per head and the clearance rate for commercial heifers was an impressive 97%.
With many bulls sold privately and working into double figures of age, a reduced entry was topped at 11,000gns by the reserve overall champion, Rednock Tarzan from Gill and Malcolm Pye, Port of Menteith.
Their 19-month-old heterozygous polled bull brought out by stockman Alfie Mcgregor, is the first son sold at public auction by the lead priced French Testing Station April 2021 sire, Senateur. His dam, Rednock Dandelion, a Rigel Munro daughter, is also a star performer having already produced the 11,000gns Rednock Shaggy and the 6500gns Rednock Phoenix.
Tarzan which was breed champion at the Great Yorkshire; reserve overall at the Royal Highland and reserve any other breed champion at Stirling, was knocked down to Iain and Rob Livesey buying for their Cleuchhead herd based at Broomhill, Kaimend, Carnwath.

The 155-strong Rednock herd enjoyed a bumper trade, selling three of the top four highest priced bulls, with their other two selling at 6200gns and 6000gns.
Dearest was the similarly aged Rednock Trojan, a homozygous polled son of Rednock Oswald – a bull retained for breeding that sired the 11,000gns Rednock Shaggy. Trojan’s dam is Rigel Dior, a polled cow by Oldcastle Gemini. The bull was knocked down to John Wildman, farm manager of Glenkiln Farms Partnership, Crocketford, Castle Douglas.
Just behind, on 6000gns, Rednock Toreador, a March 2022-born bull from the Pyes, was bought by BJD Lyburn, Overbow Farm, Forfar. For his money, he gets one of the first sons of the French AI sire, Icare to come to the market, out of the Rigel Officer daughter, Rednock Carmen.
Second top price was 7500gns paid for the male champion, Cuil Seattle, from Colin and Angus McClymont, Cuil, Palnure, Newton Stewart.
Their 27-month-old bull which was on his first outing from the farm, is the first son sold by Darnford Powerhouse, a bull bought privately from David Watson that goes back to Niall and Katy Blair’s 6500gns Cammock Mormo.
The dam, Cuil Petal, is sired by the Irish bull Knottown Nector. Seattle sold to near neighbours, David and Neil Austin, Boreland of Girthon, Gatehouse of Fleet.
The champion heifer, Cleuchhead Hope, a 19-month-old entry from the Liveseys, led the female trade at 6500gns when selling to John Martin and Hazel Forsyth of the Swinlees herd from Dalry, Ayrshire.
“We’ve been breeding Salers since 1996 and threw away the calving jack years ago when the calves are so easy calved,” said Mr Martin, who calves all his cows outside on the hill when the progeny are so quick to get to their feet and suckle.
Their purchase was bought for her growth and milk figures when Hope weighed in at 350kg at weaning without creep feed. Sired by the French bull, Noble, she is out of a previous home-bred Hope by Cleuchhead Killycrankie.
Judge, George McCall of the Carrick View herd, Co Armagh, Northern Ireland, found his reserve female in the 18-month-old Cleuchhead Carat, from the same home.
A daughter of Essil Olly, out of the Bacardi Normandy-sired, Cleuchhead Carat, she headed home with Angus Gothorpe, Approach Farm, Hollicarrs, York.
In-calf heifers forward from the production sale of Patrick Boyd’s Drumaglea herd from the Isle of Tiree, peaked at 4000gns for the rising two-year-old, Drumaglea Select.
Another daughter of the French sire, Icare, she is out of Drumaglea Jude, which goes back to Mr Boyd’s foundation female, Vendee. Select sold due in February to Lorenzo, to H Limond, Dromore, Kirkmichael. Ayrshire.
James Morton and Son, Kaeside, Melrose, then went to 3200gns for Drumaglea Sonsie, from the same home. This similarly aged entry is sired by the French bull, Django and out of Drumaglea Bella – the dam of the Drumaglea Perseus which sold here in 2022 for 9000gns. Sonsie sold in calf to Hibou and due in April.
Commercial heifers met a flying trade with a top price of £2900 paid for four in-calf heifers from David and Neil Austin, Boreland of Girthon, purchased by Ian Stark, South Ballo, Abernyte.
John Martin, Swinlees, also saw a buoyant trade for in-calf heifer selling four at £2800 per head.
Colin and Angus McClymont, Cuil, produced the champion and reserve winning pens of commercial heifers with yearling entries which sold to £2000 and £1900 twice.
The father and son duo sold 50 yearling Salers cross heifers to average £1748.
Averages: Pedigree cattle – 11 bulls, £5765.45 (+£1033.45 for four fewer); 12 Drumnaglea production females, £2842.50. Commercial cattle – 53 in-calf heifers, £2103.77 (-£86.03 for four more); 18 heifer stirks, £1122.22 (-£38.74 for 55 fewer); 137 bulling heifers, £1730.29 (+£408.80 for 23 more sold).
