Belted Galloway records were smashed at Castle Douglas, when females sold to a new high of 11,000gns and bulls matched the previous best set last year of 20,000gns.
Topping the sale at 20,000gns was the April 2022-born bull, Racy Ghyll Jay Z from James and Helen Rebanks, Racy Ghyll Farm, Penrith. A son of Mochrum Colonel, he is bred from Lomond Dinky, which is a daughter of Speddoch Rocky. Jay Z was knocked down to AS and CJ Hodgson, Glencoyne, Glenrudding.
Carolyn Fletcher of the Barwise herd, Appleby-in-Westmorland, took 15,000gns from Duncan Maxwell, Blairvockie, Drymen, for her June 2022-born bull, Barwise Jamboree. He is sired by Maybeck Dundee, whilst the dam, Barwise Jamilla, goes back to Whitepool Kite Mark.
It was a day to remember for Alison Taylor and family, Grassknop, Penrith, too when she secured the pre-sale champion and reserve with entries which later made 10,000gns and 11,000gns respectively. Her runner up was the dearest of the two when selling to John and Jenny Rix, of Wissington Charolais, Colchester. This was the two-year-old bull, Grassknop Jobert, which is a son of Cairnsmore Liniker, out of Park Eve, a Barwise Jago daughter.
The pre-sale champion, Grassknop Kenzo, also stood reserve junior champion at the Highland Show and junior champion and reserve male at this year’s Great Yorkshire Show. This 18-month-old is a son of Coulmony Maximus and out of the Staffords Cornelius-sired dam, Speddoch Ebony. He was knocked down to CM Ryder, Scaife Hall, Blubberhouses.
Another by the same sire, Grassknop Kyrie 07417, then made 5000gns when the hammer fell to Chesthill Farms, Glenlion. This April 2023-born bull is out of the Barwise Jura daughter, Dunay Lucy.
Castleton Angus then realised 7000gns for T Biggart, Castleton Farm, Dollar, when selling to William Mack, The Grange, Surlingham, Norwich. This 18-month-old is a son of Clifton Hercules, and out of the 2023 Highland Show champion, Croasdale Rhianna.
Three bulls realised 6000gns. First to achieve that was the two-year-old, Coulmony Sidney, from AR Laing, Coulmony House, Forres. A son of Shelsleys Bruce, he is bred from the Whitepool Kite Mark daughter, Coulmony Dee. He heads to Dumfries to work for the Speddoch Farm Partnership, based at Muil Farm, Shawhead.
Higherhouse Mr President from Robbie Taberner and Hannah Grummett, Crane Wood Farm, Clitheroe, made the same money when selling to Basil Lawson, North Cassingray, Largoward. This December 2022-born bull is sired by Lomond Tamnavulin which was champion here in 2018, whilst the dam, Barwise Miss Mandy 961, goes back to Whitepool Kite Mark.
The third bull to achieve 6000gns was the August 2022-born, Croasdale Taurus from MH and MA Handley, Croasdale House Farm, Clitheroe. A son of Lomond Whisky Galore, he is out of Croasdale Junior, which goes back to Solway Winston. He sold to Paradise Farmers, Grange Croft, Hull.
Hartleyburn Harry 2 was next in the money at 5000gns for HL Whitfield and Son, Batry Shield Farm, Haltwhistle. This March 2022-born bull is sired by Lomond Tobermory and out the Cairnsmore Fergus sired-dam, Hartleyburn Georgina. He found a new home with John Fleming, Castle Sinniness, Glenluce.
A new breed record of 11,000gns was achieved among the females for the May 2020-born in-calf cow, Coulmony Margaux 41084 from Molly (17) and Daisy (15) Keiley, from Carton Croft, Dalbeattie. A daughter of Shelsleys Bruce, she is bred from Coulmony May which goes back to Whitepool Kite Mark. She sold due at the end of January to Tobergill Yuist, and heads to Langley with M Forster, T/A Elgany Farms, New Barn.
Leading the bulling heifer entry at 7000gns was Dornells Kate from James Jack, Dornells, Castle Douglas, purchased by Allan and Susan Campbell, Alt-Na-Craik, Lochgoilhead. A daughter of Lipwood Machermore she is bred from Glen Garnett, which is sired by Lomond Laphroaig.
Next best at 4600gns was the August 2022-born bulling heifer, Huntfield Zetta 45440, from J and Z Kirk, Low Kirkbride, Dumfries. Sired by Lullenden Aztec Warrior, she is out of the Huntfield Red Bull daughter, Huntfield Xandra, and found a new home with Bill and Jane Landers and son, Bobby, Bargaly, Newton Stewart.
Burnfoot Trudy 48036 then made 4000gns for Hugh and Nancy Sloan, Burnfoot, Lauder. Their 19-month-old heifer is a daughter of Hilton Athos, and out of Burnfoot Patsy. She sold to John and Jenny Rix, Wissington Charolais.
Matching that price, Duncan Maxwell, Blairvockie, Drymen, sold the April 2022-born in-calf heifer, Lomond Cher to B Allison, T/A Todd Farming, Lincolnshire. She is sired by Lomond 23 Alpha and out of Lomond Princess Poppy.
