A NEW centre record for a crossing-type Bluefaced Leicester was achieved at Carlisle when the pre-sale champion from Marian and William Porter made £32,000.

The brother-and-sister duo from Riddings, Richmond, achieved a personal best for their small flock. Sired by Brennand S1, a tup purchased out of Hawes for £12,000, he is bred from a Hewgill dam which was bought from John Lord for £6000, going back to Riddings L7.

A full brother to this boy made £16,000 at Hawes the previous week.

He was knocked down in a four-way split to Kevin Ridley of the Shitlington flock, Hexham; Malcolm and Gary Thornborrow of the Dawyck flock, Peebles; Messrs Shennan of the Farden flock, Girvan; and Alec and Anders Brown of the Macqueston flock, Thornhill.

Dan and Jordan Rutter-Armstrong of the Howgate flock, Penrith, were next in the money at £8000. Their ram lamb is sired by Smearsett D15 and out of a Carry House ewe which was bought at Carlisle. Martin Allan, Greenhow, Dufton, Appleby, took this lamb home.

Martyn Archer, Carry House, Hexham, also had a field day selling 10 ram lambs to average £2810. His top two priced rams were both sons of Midlock Magic, a tup bought out of Hawes for £25,000 and bred the majority of Hawes sale leaders this year, with the Carry House pen up to £20,000. The best for Carry House made £5200 when selling to George and John Browell, Quarry House, Thockrington, Hexham, while the latter made £3800 to Messrs Johnson, Oddendale, Shap, Penrith, having stood fourth in the pre-sale show.

This was closely followed at £5000 for the best from the Reed family of the West Biggins flock, Bishop Auckland. Messrs Hill, Great Asby, Appleby-in-Westmorland, got for their money a ram lamb by Spurrigg P2, out of a Carry House bred dam, and his full brother made £6500 at Hawes.

John and Callum Park of the Forebrae flock, Dalpeddar, Sanquhar, took £5000 from James and Tom Hamilton, Kirkton, Abington, Biggar. This ram lamb is a son of the £5000 Carlisle purchase, Alwinton P3 and out of a home-bred dam by Drimsynie M5.

Another by the Midlock Magic sire realised £5000 for Andrew Hunter, Steel, Hexham. This ram lamb is out of a home-bred ewe which is a daughter of the £12,000 West Biggins N2. Messrs English, Wark, Hexham Northumberland, were the final bidders

Achieving a personal best of £4500 was Alex Kirkpatrick of the Barr flock, Sanquhar, when he sold his ram lamb to Messrs Hedley, Earlston. A son of Duhonw R12 he is out of one of the best ewes in the flock which is a daughter of Underwood P3.

Amy Campbell, Glenrath, Peebles sold her pen leader for £4000 to WD Barrowman, Mid Knockglass, Stranraer. This March-born ram lamb is a son of Carry House S24 and he is bred from a Drimsynie K1 daughter.

After their big purchase, Alec and Anders Brown, Macqueston, reached £4000 for their ram lamb, a son of the £15,000 Hewgill R2, which bred 12 Mule ewe lambs in their top pen at Castle Douglas this year which made £200 per head. Out of a home-bred ewe which goes back to Highberries M1, he sold to Nick Milton, Benderloch, Oban.

Topping the shearling trade at £4000 was the Gass family, Nunscleugh, Carlisle. A son of Carry House R5, a tup purchased at Hawes for £5500, his dam is backed by home-bred genetics. John Nicholson, Roadhead, Carlisle, took this boy home.
