A ram lamb from Sanquhar-based Francis Barbour's Newark flock led the Berrichon Sheep Society sale at Carlisle, when selling for the top price of 1500gns.

Newark Adonis, a January-born entry is sired by the Newark Vulture son, Newark West Point, out of a home-bred ewe by Janos Uncle Bett and sold down to Devon with Messrs Yeo, Braunton, Devon.

Mrs Barbour also sold the equal top priced shearling ram at 1100gns and another at 1000gns. Both were sons of West Point with the dearest, Newark Zafar which stood second at the Royal Highland, purchased by Messrs Davenport, Sandbach, Cheshire.

Newark Z4 made 1000gns selling to Messrs Thornborrow, Leyburn, North Yorkshire.

Second top price was 1400gns paid by Messrs Watson, Kirkcudbright for a ram lamb from Welsh breeder, Brian Evans, Penrhos, Trefeglwys. Janos Ash is by a home-bred son of a Marshland ram.

The same home also sold Yarburgh Zeus, a shearling son of Westcote Ultimatum for 1050gns to Andrew Bunting, New Abbey, Dumfries.

Chris Curry, Burradon, Morpeth, forked out 1100gns for the triplet-born shearling ram, Glyncoch Zlatan, from A Bowen, Mayfield, St Clears, Carmarthenshire. He is sired by Janus Uncle David and stood second at the Royal Welsh as a ram lamb.

Females sold to 600gns for a ewe lamb from Mr Evans Janus flock. Janus Ace of Spades was bought by Messrs Rees, Ammanford, Carmarthenshire.

Averages: 12 Shearling rams, £745; 12 ram lambs, £661.50; seven ewe lambs, £457.50.
