Entries from Craig and Katreen Malone, Pitcairn, led the way at Caledonian Marts' show and sale of Scotch Mule ewe lambs when they secured the championship and top price of £182.

Judge Matthew Pirrie, Drumbeg Farms, found his reserve winners in a pen from Messrs Laidlaw, Knowehead, Carron Bridge that later made £166.

Duncan MacGregor, Burnhead, Kilsyth, produced the third prize pen that sold for £166.

Mule ewe lambs levelled at £146.35 (+£34.08 on the year), with the small to middle sized entries taking the largest jump.

Gimmers peaked at £330 for a pen of Beltex cross Charollais from R and M Patterson, Upper Auchenlay, Dunblane, with Mules selling to £250 for a pen from Ross Brothers, Wardhead, Strichen.

Carlisle

Shearling rams sold to 2800gns and gimmers peaked at 700gns at the 21st production sale of behalf of Messrs Whiteford, Tercrosset.

The sale, conducted by Harrison and Hetherington, was topped by a Texel ram, followed at 2000gns by a Beltex. The 128 shearling rams averaged £933.11.

A pair of Texels topped the females at 700gns with 185 gimmers averaging £402.27.

A multi-breed show and sale of 1000 breeding ewes and gimmers conducted by North West Auctions saw a buoyant trade throughout which peaked at £420 by a single Suffolk gimmer from M and J Greenwood, Middleton.

The first prize pen of 10 Mule gimmers from Messrs Robinson and Ward, Intack, sold for £325.

Just behind, on £320, was a pen of 10 continental gimmers from JR and LA Capstick, Beckside.

North Country Mule ewes peaked at £255 for home-bred one-crop ewes from AR Edmondson, Hawkswell Farm with others selling at £250 from FI and ME Little, Helm Croft and JM Mawson, Hole Beck Farm.

Suffolk cross ewes sold to £270 for one-crops from TA and JA Dixon, Yoad Pot with others £230-£250. Texel crosses sold to £240 on three occasions for one-crops from FI and ME Little, Helm Croft with others to £220-£235.

Mule ewes reached £255 to average £195; Suffolk crosses peaked at £270 to average £242; Cheviot Mules reached £190 to level at £177 and Texel cross ewes were topped at £240 to average £201.

Mule gimmers averaged £245 with Cheviot Mules selling to £270 from JS and KM Wilson and Son, Kendal.

Fearn Farm

The Scott family's 13th Great from Grass on-farm sale at Fearn Farm, Ross-shire saw 91 shearling rams average £971, up £156 on the year while gimmers levelled at £232 which represents a rise of £55.

Beef Shorthorn cattle were also forward for sale.

The sale stage through the Yourbid Online Auction System, saw various performance-recorded rams on offer to include Texel, Beltex, Beltex cross Texel, Suffolk, Suffolk cross Aberfields and Aberfield cross Romneys.

A selection of Texel cross, Aberfield cross, Suffolk cross, and Romney cross gimmers made up the remainder of the sale.

Aberfield cross Romney shearling rams proved most popular averaging £1338 followed by Texels at £1205; Aberfields at £1046 and Beltex cross Texels at £980.

Top price was £1800, paid for an Aberfield cross Romney ram purchased by Jim Maclean.

Gimmers peaked at £290 on two occasions – for a pen of eight Aberfield crosses which sold to DK MacLennan of Braepark, and for six Suffolk crosses which headed home with James McDowall of Culbokie.

Beef Shorthorn bulls sold to £6000 twice, with Fearn Tyrant selling to Jock and Fiona Gibson of Edinvale, Forres while Fearn Tweed was purchased by Rattray Estate managed by Calum Clark.

Heifers were topped at £3000 for Fearn Hene Gertrude, purchased by Hugh Murray, Migdale Bonar Bridge.

Castle Douglas

On Monday, Wallets Marts held their annual Blackface ewe lamb sale which saw 1644 head forward sell to a top of £145 for a pen from Messrs Paton, Craig, Straiton, to average £100.19, up £5.98 on the year.

Record averages were achieved in all sections at Aberdeen and Northern Marts main sale of breeding sheep where 2305 head sold to a high of £270 for pure Texels from Mid Haddo, Fyvie.

At the show and sale of Mule ewe lambs, judge, John MacRobert, Stonieley, awarded the red rosette to a pen of 32 from David Cowie, Scollays Cross. They later sold for £190 to the judge.

Gimmer averages improved in all sections with Mules at £229.39 (+46.33 on the year); pure Texel gimmers levelled at £218.53; continentals, £228.92 (+40.78); Cheviot Mules, £251.18 (+£63.96); Charollais crosses, £233.75; Half-breds, £200.28 (+£7.98) and Bluefaced Leicester cross gimmers balanced out at £215.
