Averages improved on the year at Craig Wilson’s first breeding sheep sale of the year where 1022 Mule ewe lambs averaged £146 (+£15) for 208 more sold and 730 Mule gimmers cashed in at £208.92 (+£36) for 67 more.

Judge James Pirrie found his champion gimmers in a pen from J Paterson, East Dykes which realised £240. Top price however was £250 paid for a pen from George and Dianne Allan. The reserve pen from Shawhead made £215.

The champion Mule ewe lambs – a pen of 40 from Messrs Dunlop, Pinvalley – made £180, with the reserve again from Shawhead selling for £175.

The 21 pedigree females sold in the MV accredited ring met a 100% clearance selling to £650 and £580 for Texel gimmers from R McMaster, Springfield, Arran, who also sold five traditional Bluefaced Leicester gimmers to average £260 with a top of £400.

A Dutch Spotted gimmer from WB Baird, Floors made £350.

Newton Stewart

Scotch Mule gimmers from J McKenna and Sons, Gass, Kirkcowan and A Wright, Traboyack Farms, sold for the joint top price of £200 per head at Craig Wilson’s opening breeding sheep and store lambs at Newton Stewart.

Gass, Kirkcowan and KT Lochhead, St Ninians Grove, produced the lead priced Scotch Mule ewe lambs at £132.

Overall, 46 Mule gimmers averaged £178.24p (+£26.24p on the year); 71 Mule ewe lambs averaged £130 (+£10) and 118 ewes averaged £101.62p (+£37.62p).

Carlisle

Suffolk cross ewes from Messrs Soulsby, Williamsgill, topped Harrison and Hetherington’s Late August Fair sale of 850 head of breeding sheep at £440.

The pen sold to Willy Pearson, Wavercroft.

Ewes and gimmers of all breeds and crosses averaged £205.91.
