Fife-based Craig and Katreen Malone, Pitcairn, Cardenden, had a field day at Harrison and Hetherington’s sale of 355 cows and heifers with calves at foot at Carlisle, selling to top priced lots at £7200 and £5500.

The couple, who have already sold several of the top-priced lots at previous sales this year, produced their dearest of the season with a home-bred Limousin cross heifer which sold with heifer calf at foot by the Limousin AI sire, Tomschoice Lexicon.

The team also received £5500 for a Limousin cross heifer with bull calf at foot and sold seven heifers with calves to average £4844.

Entries from Messrs McAlister, Wester Thomaston, Banknock, Bonnybridge, also sold well at £5000 and £4900 for Limousin cross heifers with calves.

Biggest consignors Messrs Livingstone, Kirtlevale, sold no fewer than 42 heifers with calves at foot to a top of £5200 for a Limousin cross heifer and calf to average £3229.

An added feature of the event was the dispersal from Crowhall Farms which saw stock cows sell to £4800 for a five-year-old Limousin with bull calf and a Limousin stock bull at £5800. They sold 85 cows to average £2600.

Messrs Renton, Highlaws sold the top-priced British Blue cross cow and bull calf for £4500.

Dumfriesshire-based Andrew Ewing, Dumbretton, Annan, sold the top two highest-priced bulling heifers at £3700 for a red roan Limousin cross heifer and £3000 for a Black Limousin.

By the end of the day, heifers and calves averaged £2984; cows and calves at £2611; and 160 bulling heifers levelled at £1970.46.

The small but select show of beef bulls forward peaked at 4500gns for a pedigree Limousin from Messrs Bell, Hilltop Farm, Keswick, followed at 4400gns for a three-quarter Limousin bull from Messrs Robertson, Newton Logierait, Pitlochry.
