A disappointing trade for Charolais bulls at the breed’s society sale at Carlisle, saw fewer bulls sold on the year albeit with a top price of 10,000gns.

While averages were on a par with last year’s sale at £6076 for 31, there were 17 fewer cashed.

Sale leader at 10,000gns was the first prize senior bull, Thrunton Trouper from Ian Campbell and sons, Andrew and Bruce, Alnwick, Northumberland.

This November 2022-born bull is ranked fourth out of all the bulls in the market for calving ease direct at +15.6, and found a new home with JC Hobday and Son, Hawick. Backed by home-bred genetics, he is sired by Thrunton Nevada and out of the Thrunton Gladiator daughter, Thrunton Nigella.

The same home sold Thrunton Topcat for 6500gns to Messrs Heard, Okehampton, Devon. Third at the pre-sale show, he is a son of Maerdy Jerusalem and out of Thrunton Jubilant.

Bob and Kay Adam and sons Andrew and James, Newhouse of Glamis, Forfar, sold their first prize junior, Newhouse Toddy, for 8500gns to Messrs Evans and Corfield, Ludlow, Shropshire. This December 2022-born bull is a son of Ballinlare Phantom, and bred from Newhouse Pimms, which goes back to Brampton Nacodar.

The same home produced the reserve overall champion in Newhouse Tzar, a similarly aged bull by the same sire, which made 7000gns. Out of Newhouse Princess, he was knocked down to G and H Jerman, Newtown, Powys.

The judge, Neil Brown, Northampton, found his champion in the bull, Elgin Teuchter from Matthew Milne, Elgin, which went on to make 8000gns. This October 2022-born Glenericht Pegasus son is out of Elgin Ovette, which goes back to Woodpark Elgin. Champion at Nairn and Grantown Shows, Teuchter was knocked down to P Smith and Son, Biggar, Lanarkshire.

The third prize November 2022-born, myostatin free bull, Caylers Thunder from David and Louise Barker’s Caylers herd from, Nuthampstead, realised 8000gns. Sired by Meloman he is bred from the Rosanna Jupiter daughter, Caylers Roxy and sold to Allen Drysdale of the Glenericht herd, Middle Drimmie, Blairgowrie.

Next in the money at 7200gns was the November 2022-born, Whitecliffe Teddy, from Mark and Jane Hayhurst of Great Carr Farm, Kirby Misperton, North Yorkshire. A son of Whitecliffe Priceless out of Whitecliffe Polly, a Blelack Digger daughter, he sold with two copies of the F94L gene to AJ Clark, Millom, Cumbria.

The reserve junior champion, Marwood Universe, a 16-month-old bull from Roy and Neil Blyth, Middleton House, Elwick, Hartlepool, made 7000gns. Fourth in his class, he sold to AW and G S Panniers, Bishop Frome, Worcestershire. He is by the French sire, Ravissant and is bred from the Balthayock Lineup-sired dam, Marwood Paprika.

Ian and Dot Goldie, Greenfield, Cummertrees, Annan, sold their best for 6500gns to Dean Paul, Old Stead, York, North Yorkshire. Reserve senior champion at the pre-sale show, Solwayfirth Thor is a son of the £15,000 Glenericht Ralph and out of Solwayfirth Rihanna.

Among the females a top price of 6000gns was achieved for the May 2022-born heifer, Balmyle Tiara from Bill Bruce, Meigle, Perthshire. A Maerdy Onedirection daughter which bred the 28,000gns Balmyle Sandy, she is out of Balmyle Horoscope, which goes back to Maerdy Egret. She sold to FA and PJ Pilkington and Son, Ashbourne, Derbyshire.

Lawersbridge Teardrop from D Smith and Sons, Mauchline, made 5400gns for E and R Brass and Son, Penrith, Cumbria. This 16-month-old is a daughter of Whitecliffe Muskateer, out of Lawersbridge Indi and sold in calf to an Aberdeen Angus.

The draft sale of Gretnahouse cattle that were unable to be exported to Ireland as a result of the bluetongue, were sold under original dispersal rules, and reached 6000gns twice.

First at that price was Gretnahouse Oasis from C Todd, Lisburn, Co Down. Sired by Westcarse Jimmy and out of Gretnahouse Irene, she sold in calf to Lochend Nighthawk to the Barlow Brothers, Leyland, Lancashire.

The same seller sold Gretnahouse Peauty and her bull calf Gretnahouse Uproar for 5000gns to Jack and Elma Wight of the Midshield herd, Townfoot, Symington. This five-year-old is a daughter of Balthayock Gladiator and the September-born calf is by Lochend Nighthawk.

Andrew Ewing, Annan, went to 6000gns for Gretnahouse Obaywatch from C Ferris, Millisle, Co Down. This six-year-old by Blelack Fabulous is bred from Gretnahouse Baywatch which has bred sons to 18,000gns. She sold with her bull calf at foot, Gretnahouse Urchin, by Lochend Nighthawk.

Jack and Elma Wight, Midshield, also went to 5000gns for Gretnahouse Togaradise, a rising two-year-old by Lochend Nighthawk, out of Gretnahouse Ogaradise.
