Scottish commercial cattle enthusiasts, Stewart and Lynsey Bett, Stirling, had their work cut out for them as official judges at a pre-sale show of potential exhibition calves at Brecon, where their choice of champion went on to sell for a whopping £9200.

They found their supreme in the May 2023-born Limousin cross heifer, Miss Dior from the Jones family, Tyisaf, Builth Wells. By Millgate Rob and out of a British Blue cross cow, it topped the sale and was snapped up by Colin Harris, Devon.

Aberdeenshire breeder, Blair Duffton purchased several lots, to include the reserve overall champion, Smokie at £6100. This home-bred May 2023-born Limousin cross heifer from the Davies family, Caebetran, Brecon, is out of a home-bred British Blue cross cow and sired by their stock bull, Ritchies Seryl.

Heading back in the same trailer at £5300 was the similarly aged pedigree Limousin heifer, Faidre You Lucky, from HG and IW Rees, Caersws. She is sired by Sarkley Lordship and out of a home-bred cow.

The top price steer at £3700 also sold to Mr Duffton. This was a four-month-old from Messrs Davies and Millichap, Glamorgan. First in his class, this British Blue cross is sired by Rhymil Rizzle Kicks.

The champion steer, Pocket Rocket, an eight-month-old Limousin cross from JM and AM Lewis, Carmarthen, sold for £2600 to Stewart and Lynsey Bett.

Other notable prices saw the first prize July 2023-born heifer, a Limousin cross from GG and CB Morris, Brecon, by Garrowby Rembrant, sell for £4250 to P and L Calcraft, Devon.

Having purchased the champion earlier in the day, Mr Harris also went to £4200 for the eight-month-old Limousin heifer, Cheeky Vimto from JM and AM Lewis, Carmarthen.

The reserve champion steer, Tip Top 2 from Colin and Wendy Phillips, Hereford, realised £3000. This April 2023-born steer is by Powerhouse Elite, and was knocked down to RH Naylor, Ashbourne.

Next best at £2700 was the first prize May 2023-born British Blue cross heifer from G Jones, Builth Wells. Sired by Du Grand Bon Dieu, he found a new home with RG Davies, Leicester.

Averages: 15 steers, £2040.67; 17 heifers, £3101.18.
