Dean Saunders of the Maidenlands herd at Tarn Flatt, Ulverston, produced the 4400gns top priced lot at a show and sale of British Blue bulls and females at Skipton.

The rising two-year-old bull, Maidenlands Superman, is from the first crop of sons sired by the 9000gns Almeley Marhez, and bred from Maidenlands Holly, a daughter of Imperial De L’Ecluse. He sold down to Wales with Henry and Margaret Dixon, and sons David and Robert, Walterstone Farm, Haverfordwest.

Increased entries saw 38 head sold, double that of 2023, with an 84% clearance of bulls to average £3465 and heifers cashing in at £2387.

Second top price was 4300gns for the first bull in the ring, Valley Pacha, from Richard Carruthers, Raw Foot, Brampton. This October 2020-born entry is by Tweeddale Ironman and out of Valley Nina, an ET daughter of Kubitus De Bray. He joined the Dean Partnership from Bolton Percy, Selby.

The junior bull, JRJ Stormzy, from Paul Johnson, Torrington, York, made 3800gns when selling to JG Bamforth and Sons in Thongsbridge, Kirklees. Sired by Cromwell Fendt, he is out of Lukeroyal Gem.

Stewart and Joel Gill, of the Hallfield herd, Dacre, Harrogate, matched that price with their third prize winner, Hallfield Sowers. A Greystone Noveltee son bred from the Trencrom Ka Ching daughter, Hallfield Mary Sow, he found a new home with B and JD Beadle and Son, of Staindrop.

The same home topped the females at 3000gns with Hallfield Sophie which heads up to Aberdeenshire with Bill Stephens, Turriff. This first prize senior heifer is sired by Sandyvale Jagerbomb, out of Hallfield Let’s Dance and sold in calf to Hallfield Mojo, a previous Great Yorkshire senior male champion.

Next best at 2500gns was the rising two-year-old, Hallfield Sunflower from the same home. A daughter of the 5000gns Hallfield Otto, out of Hallfield Martha, she sold to D Walbank, Oakworth.

Judge, Graham Coates, of the Greystone herd, found his champion in a Hallfield maiden heifer too. Hallfield Tia, a daughter of Hallfield Puma, out of Hallfield Lily, made 2400gns selling to Daniel Thackray, Fewston, with the similarly aged Hallfield Sienna, by the same sire, making the same money to Mike Thuey, Easingwold.
